I had a layover for 3 hours in Narita on my way to Hong Kong before 1997, under British rule.

I was aircrew on C130's for the USCG and sometimes we have good will deployments to other countries to practice with their Coast Guard/rescue services. People that get selected to do these deployments is based on high fly time, you coming in on-call to stand ready crew or actually launch on days you're not slated to fill that role, doing the deployments no one wants to do.

I was given the choice to deploy to Japan for 2 weeks but turned it down because I had already also done a good will deployment to Hong Kong (under China rule) a few months before and a lot of guys were getting bitchy because I was given Hong Kong and now Japan.

I shoulda took it, I was given it for a reason. I did all the sht flights nobody else wanted to do.

Haven't been, but may go in the future. Have a friend of a friend whose teaching english over there (rural area), may visit in the future

Yes, lived in Tokyo for a year in the military, then vacationed there a year later.
