TLDR

OP you have to seek private contractors that will work for cash and do an extremely good job, usually much better than proper companies and contractors, at 1/3 to 1/5 of the cost, this is how I renovated the entire house for about 40k, if I did it with Just calling contractors by googling them it would be about 200,000 or more.

It’s word of mouth, you have to ask around and have people come out and give you a quote. But calling Yellow Pages or Google, or whatever is pointless, you’re gonna get ripped off,

When you can't fix something around your home yourself, shop around. Are you part of any community groups? That's a fantastic resource to explore. I find lots of tradies to help me out via community groups.

WAY back in the day I worked for a bank. There was a general contractor that banked with us and he'd always bullchit and talk business. He told me he always would make up random numbers for his quote. So instead of a $15,000 quote, he'd write up a $14,732 quote just because it looked better than 15K and it wasn't an even amount.

I would say most aren’t scammers, they just really don’t need the extra work. So if they’re they’re going to do it, they will charge.

Basically if you’re not a regular customer who they’re going $100k+ per year in business with, you’ll get fuked.
