As someone who is trying to do it without any pension system, I can tell you that 85k fixed amount per year is significant. That would require a $2.5M invested portfolio (3% SWR), and also carry higher risk/volatility.

A friend of mine is a firefighter and after a long tenure will get a guaranteed payout with the pension for life. I used to think that wasn't a big deal, and I'm better off in the private sector, but when you look at the numbers and risk it's significant.

Both are vital components of an enjoyable and meaningful life, but negative experiences at some time or another has caused the individual to turn on them.

Itโ€™s important to not chalk it up to an intrinsic dislike and keep in mind that you may just have not found the right work, or people, yet.
i think "i like my job" is just a lie for 99% of people...but they don't have an alternative to working so they just try real hard to convince themselves it's true.
