Read my posts, im not arguing if $400k makes up the top 1% of earners in the US. What I am arguing is that people equate a 1%'er and the lifestyle it brings and a true 1% earner doesnt live that lifestyle. As you noted you have to be in the top 00001% to be living like the occupy wall street protesters think 1%'ers live.

I speak from experience. I have a handful of friends in that earner's range, one of which I was the best man in his wedding. He is a partner in a radiology firm of 5. They do A LOT of business. I'd guess he pulls $600k. He lives in a sub $1M home and drives a BMW 550. No private jets. No grey pupon in the back of a Rolls Royce, none of that. He does however spend north of $10k/month on the kids school, sports activities, nannies, etc. But its not the lavish life everyone thinks it is.

I understand where you are coming from. The delusion lies in the fact that people think they can go get a degree (say engineering) and make big money without being exceptional. But on the flip side, I am acquaintances, business partners or friends with at least 5 people under the age of 30 that make anywhere from $500k - $2M / year so they do exists. And even they do not fly private.

The only people who make that much and live modest are either saving 100K a year or they're living in Manhattan and paying 7 grand a month for rent. There's a reason 300K is top 1% or top 0.5% - it's living better than 99.5% of the general public. If you live in a reasonably priced area and make that much, you're living a great lifestyle.

Hmm if I was taking that much home a month right now...

-immediately pay off ALL debts
-student loans, auto loan, medical bills, etc anything that accrues interest at my expense
-purchase a new prius as DD
-x% in 401k and retirement fund
-x% for living expenses/housing expenses/transportation cost/other necessities
-x% for entertainment budget
-rest in bonds, stocks and other goodies

My parents were refugees from a war. They came here with literally nothing and we grew up in the hood. I appreciate everything we have been fortunate enough to achieve but I also stay grounded. I know I can do better and I don't claim to be a 1%'er, I don't claim to be a baller, I don't claim any of that. Hell when I met my wife she was clearing $150k on her own and was driving a 12 year old Honda Accord Lx with paint peeling off the hood and living at home.

When you compare it to oil barons, kings of industry, big land devs, etc, it's pretty modest. It's eye opening that the difference between 99% and 99.99 percent is WAYYYYY more than the difference between a 10%er and a 99%er.

Man insurance usually takes a long time to build up. I have one client who has 40-50 employees, been doing it 30 years, and I don't think he makes 1 mil profit. I did know a guy who had a trucking brokerage (didn't know it was a thing until he told me) and he made good cash just independently doing it from home.

She was a pharmacy manager. She now works part time as we have 2 kids.

Depends on what type of insurance. This guy saw an angle and is a hustler. 27 years old, is not an insurance agent for a big firm, he is his own firm. He sells to a niche market. He is Hispanic and most of his clients deal in cash.

If your buddy has 50 employees in the insurance game, even if he is something like a farmers agent you can bet he's pulling in close to 7 figures.
