Stay in a small village for a week and you'll see REAL homey atmosphere and social connections, and love among friends, neighbors, and families--I think Dunbar's number actually derived from studying small villages.
disagree with this, yes people accumulate "friends" on social media but it's not like anyone thinks they are actually close with 300 people or even try to be.

In some sense people use those sites a substitute for real interaction, but I think most people at least text/call there real friends enough that that isn't a factor

It is nothing to do with keeping "in touch", which is itself such a beta POV.

Think about when you grew up, you hung out with the same friends day-in and day-out. You met them with regularity, there was little to no friction to meeting up.

For people in my parents generation, that remains the case today. My dad probably meets his friends 2-3 times/week because they attend the same groups. Whereas I have to actually make an effort to meet any of my friends, many of whom are now scattered all over the globe.

If I weren't married, I may well have ended up a FA who LDARed all day every day, whereas that simply wasn't the default for people in any other time in history.

I wish the internet existed for research only, and there was 0 online entertainment.

When I was a little boy, parks were crowded with kids all the time, you could make friends all the time. Malls packed full of teens, high schoolers walking around outside.

You just don't see that anymore.

Society sucks, people are out for themselves and generally mean. Couple with the fact that a big majority of the population is poor or barely making it doesnt help. Its getting harder day and day to live a comfortable life. I dont know anyone thats barely making it and is happy with life.

What about people who are comfortable and "making it"?

Very few of them have what they want either.

Social media has made chit worse by a long shot. It has people so detached from reality it's retarded. It's a "look at me" culture now but in reality no one gives a flying fuk about ur updates...although people act like they do. It's a circle jerk of no one giving a **** about each other but acting like they do.

I just don't think it explains the greater the trend though.

For example, suicide is skyrocketing for middle aged men who aren't even likely to be active on social media.

I'm telling you the cause is a bit of an awakening as to how bad most lives genuinely are. The scams that people bought into in the past aren't fooling people anymore(get a job and raise kids)

some are depressed and its not curable. some people just don't get that. its only treatable. I pray to God every night to release me from Bi polar disorder. I go to therapy and take medication. But since I was just a kid, I knew I was different. I have been fake to every new friend I make. The only friend I was honest with killed himself a month ago. I knew him since first grade and he was a brother to me. I don't admit to potential and current gfs that I'm bi polar and I hide my medication. I wear long sleeves or go to Nordstrom and have them put make up on my scars from cutting.

people who claim that they were depressed and that by taking vitamins and lifting = cured. that's terrible advice to the miscer who thinks about oding or hanging himself every night. that cured miscer was just going through some **** and came out on top. depression is a broad term.

I lift and take vitamins. my body is healthy, but I need medication, therapy and fitness to be at ease and calm.

some are sad because they cant get laid, have a job they don't like, went to a ****ty school and got a bad degree, skinny fat but I don't know if that's real depression or just over analyzing their life.

pussy is great, love is even better. but a girl wontcureyou. to be in a relationship you cant expect to bitch about your life. my ex caught me on my bull**** and she was way way younger than me. we didn't break up over that.

if you want a relationship, get your **** together. accept your life and talk to someone. I have a few friends but I'm making more. tinder is a great way to make friends believe it or not.

There's an entire world of difference between hitting up friends to chill and living within an entire community that lets you be free to be yourself and everyone treats each other like family. No one is trying to 1up each other; no superficiality ; everyone Is comfortable with themselves; and everyone Is living to LIVE like they're free from their ego. It's an absolute serene and tranquil feeling-- almost surreal.

I'm thinking it's unlikely because I see the other side to it. Things were "just as bad" 100 years ago, maybe (I personally think it was worse and better at the same time in different ways, it's more that life has just changed), but communication is now really easy and people absorb a ton of information daily, which means they're exposed to more ideas and knowledge. It's possible that this creates some sort of disconnect between what they know and what their reality is. Not necessarily a comparison problem, and not necessarily that they want to live the perfect life in terms of having 4 expensive cars, a big house, and banging 10/10 hbbs, but more that they know it could be better with the technological advances that we have (and it could be, it's a real potential) yet reality doesn't match. Culture evolves way slower than technology. And I think it's largely a subconscious thing.

A lot of it I think is to do with the way the modern world works.

Back centuries ago people would be working so hard on mere survival that negative thoughts were not able to make their way in.

Nowadays when survival is at its easiest it's ever been and people can "afford" to waste their lives watching tv, fb etc, it allows the ego (source of all depression) to creep back in.

The things that make people happy are simple. It's just that so much unnecessary crap has taken over that people have forgotten the things that make people happy. Good relationships (main thing IMO. People are the only reality, might as well start to like them), food, enjoying hobbies etc.)

Also another contributing factor is how complicated the monetary system has become. In the old days you could hunt animals and grow your own food and you'd never have to work for your living. Nowadays crap like inflation and mortgages and the advances in technology, people are more financially illiterate than ever.

Sounds like my ideal life, honestly i think just being around negative/superficial ppl affect me in a negative way as to make me want to avoid them now in order to carry on with my own goals.

have you been diagnosed or just searched on the web?

people diagnosed (by a real profession, PHd) determine if you have depression

its genetic and cannot be cured, only treated

therapy and sometimes medication

some believe that meds are a cure all, for me they are but I also see a therapist to work things out. Like CBT = cognitive behavorial therapy

look for doctors in your area that can help you identify whats going on. be honest with them.

they say the same thing. they just might start you off with an SSRI which helps you regulate your brain chemistry (I'm not a ****ing doctor but I know a little bit) (I have major depression, anxiety, and bi polar disorder.) I never took it seriously. I used street drugs to self medicate. then I got my **** together.
