I disagree. Offering to pay goes a long way with me; it's another indicator to your character. Or if not offering, at least showing sincere appreciation.

I had a friend that never used to pay first on rounds of beer, always let other jump in so he'd be last and might be able to skip. Happened many times in a row. My roommate and I had ordered a taxi to bring us home, and he asked if he could hop in... sure, but we went waaaay off course to drop him off, and he didn't even offer to pay. That was the final straw, haven't hung out with him since.
