At those northern latitudes, there is a difference in weather at even that short a distance. The earth is nearly spherical, and the angle of the sun's rays becomes more and more oblique the farther north you go.
It's because of shipping costs.
Canadians built cities with American shipping costs in mind? You realize how volatile those are, with oil prices and stuff? And that when you're shipping enough stuff to supply an entire nation's consumption needs, the cost of shipping per unit is basically nothing?

Also some of those cites are kind of old. Trade probably was a factor at some point, but THE factor? Even during the time when Canada was still a British colony and less than amicable towards us? There was a war you know.
