Are you serious? This thread is about depression with people talking about how "pointless" (i.e. hopeless) life is. Look up synonyms for pointless - senseless, futile, hopeless, fruitless...https://www.google.com/?gfe_rd=cr&ei...ntless+meaning

You can't compare it with walking around the block, because that only takes a couple of minutes. Life goes on for decades. Only an idiot would do something they find absolutely pointless and hopeless for decades. Some people like walking around the block because it gives them satisfaction. You're proving my point that people who think life is pointless think their own lives are pointless and are projecting on others.

Everything has a natural fear of death. The only people who commit to suicide are people who are mentally ill.

There's a difference between finding life pointless and being suicidal. Your way of thinking is why people who have been sad once in their life think they've experienced depression, and why people tell legit depressed people to fist themselves because they're so annoyed by sad crews muddying the waters.

Stoics also believe that life is meaningless and that control is an illusion.. but I don't hear about them killing themselves off. Understanding that it all comes to an end and nothing matters =/= hopelessness.

You keep avoiding the fact that that natural fear ofnot livingexists for a reason; that human beings serve a purpose on this planet. And life is not easy. You have to spend most of your life working in order to keep living. Someone who genuinely believes life is pointless would not choose to endure that for decades on end. Stoics believe that life has a purpose and that they are on this planet to fulfil their potential. You must be thinking about nihilism.

You can completely enjoy life while at the same time thinking it's meaningless. Im not depressed at all, I have friends, a gf, in school, working towards goals but i still think it's all ultimately pointless.

Life = Survival

I don't even know why people keep trying to deny this chit, it's like everyone wants to be a nihilist nowadays, and they're not even devoted to true nihilism either. Everyone just saying, "life has no meaning", they're projecting because their life has no meaning.

Enjoying something means that certain something has some value and meaning for you. And you wouldn't be working towards goals if you genuinely found those goals pointless. You just wouldn't.

... Everything fears death. Literally everything. The only things that don't fear death are those who are either already dead or those who are mentally ill. It doesn't mean we serve some divine purpose, it just means that we naturally don't want to die because then the species would cease to exist, and anything that multiplies wants to keep multiplying.

You're far too confident about your stance when you're just arguing semantics and not actually arguing a point. Accepting that life serves no real purpose and that it all ends =/= hopelessness if there's no fuking anxiety attached to the thought. You keep arguing that people who 'really' see no purpose to life would have killed themselves, but that's absolutely bollocks and you cannot support that thought at all. There are tons of people that see life as nothing but a blink in the eye of eternity who haven't killed themselves, so right there goes your entire argument that pointlessness = hopelessness, no matter how far you try to stretch the synonym list on dictionary.com.

You're like that dumb fuk TheAlderian, in that you think you're clever when you aren't.

lol I never said anything about a "divine purpose." Seems like you're projecting (again). I said that human beings serve a purpose on this planet and yes, that extends to all other living creatures, from elephants to flies. Human beings have to work to live and no one would put in decades of work for something they genuinely believe is pointless. Some people in this thread are seriously comparing life (which is hard) to playing a video game - these people are obviously clueless/dumb af.

This thread is full of depressed people complaining about how terrible their lives are; there's a whole lot of anxiety in here. Like I've already said, if you think the past thousands of years of human achievements are "pointless", that's just projection on your part.

Only humans find those achievements impressive and at some point, there will be no humans to marvel at them. Is that not the definition of pointless? Without eternity, everything is ultimately meaningless because ultimately everything withers away. You can enjoy your life while at the same time understanding that it doesnt actually matter. Some might even find that thought liberating

I'm not projecting at all; You said we're here for a reason, which screams 'divine purpose' since nobody would give that much value to reproducing and dying.

Did you just learn that word or summat? I said that there are people who view life as pointless and that if there is no anxiety attached to that thought, that it's not hopelessness. You're just attaching that quote to people ITT to solidify your horrible argument, an argument that isn't even fuking applicable to what I've said.

You are legit a dumb fuk trying to be insightful, but you can't actually argue a point to save your life without first shoving it down someone else's throat and pretending it's their own thought. When humanity inevitably goes extinct and is forgotten about in eternity, we'll see how much of a point a fuking skyscraper had.

You're boring me now; Fist yourself.

Human beings are fascinated by the achievements of animals and how animals live their lives (think David Attenborough's successful documentaries/tv shows), so saying that humans are only impressed by human achievements or that it's impossible to admire the efforts of a different specifies is false. You can't enjoy something that doesn't matter because there needs to be some value/meaning in something for it to be enjoyed.

In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter at all what we, humans, do. The universe is so large that we have no impact on it whatsoever. Even if we did, would it matter? What's the purpose of it all? There's nothing to save, nothing to build, nothing to do that's our ultimate purpose. Even if there was, why would it matter? It's all pointless. If you can't understand this you're obviously not ready to sit at the grown-ups table (this discussion) yet.

Calm down. You seem angry/anxious af.

I never said "divine purpose." You're projecting. I said every creature on this planet serves a purpose. You're the one poorly bringing up religious/philosophical issues that you have no idea about. The rest of the post is just you being extremely angry. I obviously hit a nerve and you have issues.

And I doubt that. Human beings are fascinated by neanderthals and dinosaurs. Extinct species are not just "forgotten."

lbr I doubt you think about earth's place in the universe on a regular basis.
So you're basically saying life on earth doesn't matter because earth is small compared to the universe. So basically the smaller something is, the less meaning it has. That is obviously BS. Ants, for example, are tiny but they serve so many purposes on this planet. Human beings are saving lives and building things every day.

extremely high cost of living compared to the past. working 40 hours a week used to be the norm, but now its more like you have to work 50 - 60 hours a week if you want to actually be successful instead of just living check to check. and that means the vast majority of your time is spent on work- paying loans and bills, instead of doing the things you really want to do

Again, not what I'm saying. Some items are very small and can hold a lot of meaning to one specific person.

Yes, ants are very useful for us. But does it matter to the universe if we have ants or not? I don't think so. So saving lives and building things is our purpose in life? That's it? You might save 10 lives in your lifetime, but in 300 years nothing of it would matter.

The universe is the biggest thing we know. And you know what would change if earth just vanished? Nothing. I don't know what you tell yourself to make life sound meaningful, but it isn't. Not a depressed person's thoughts, it is just what it is.

Exactly, if earth's place in the universe was actually relevant to you, you would be thinking about it every day while you're living your day-to-day life, to remind you how pointless your existence is. You clearly implied the size/meaning issue when you said "the universe is so large" and "the universe is the biggest thing we know." "Saving lives" and "building things" are the examples you gave me, obviously human do more than that. You have no idea what those 10 people would do with their lives and how they would impact our society, so that's a dumb hypothetical. Astronauts have already travelled to different planets and none of them showed signs of activity similar to Earth.

Relationships mean nothing to my generation. Social media has poisoned us all and everything is one big competition. Long gone are the days where everyone truly valued their family and friends more than they value 100 plus likes on an instagram picture of you and your new dog that you pretend to love in the picture. Instead of having a beer and deep conversation on the front porch you are playing beer pong in the basement and putting it on your snapchat story.

This will all end when Lord Trump takes over and we will Make America Great Again!!

Will this epidemic ever end? How will the world be for future generations? Is this the beginning of a new paradigm?
Do you wanna talk about "drugs" or do you wanna talk about depression?

People have been taking "drugs" since the time human gained self awareness.

Depression is being caused by heavy use of "social media" in young generation. People feel incomplete and lack a purpose in life so they resort to drugs to feel better (but it's not always the case).

I'm pretty sure its because there isn't really time to grow into adulthood anymore. You're expected to be successful much earlier these days and if you're not you have the wonderful influence of ******** and instagram to make you feel like chit when people around you are getting their chit together and you're in the corner with no idea what you want in life.

You see it all the time when the 40+ say stuff like 'Woah slow down and just enjoy your 20's, try a bunch of different stuff'. It's like, sure thats great advice and all but just getting on the right track these days take a lot of effort and investment to the point where you can't just willy nilly jump from thing to thing and get away with starting a career in your late 20's.

So many dudes crying over they can't get girls... here is my advice, stop making women the basis of your existence. Work on yourself, save money, take up a sport or martial art and try competing. Compete, lift and get stronger, save money, keep working towards something. In the long run boys, pussy is nice but it doesn't really matter, what you should be doing is strengthening your body and working because every day you get older, you won't get back.

I don't think you're in the position to be deciding who's smart and who isn't.
Um, I've definitely looked at babies and thought life is meaningless. I hate it when people make statements like this, as though everyone has to love babies and little kids when they just annoy the f*ck out of me.

Oh, do you mean looking at your own babies? Dat dere oxytocin is powerful stuff but doesn't mean life isn't meaningless.

I present to you the big three nikkahs.

1) Lack of social cohesion
2) Most competitive job market in who knows when
3) No gf, even for those fukin sloots it doesn't compare to a stable relationship.

A lot of people these days don't have the same feeling of belonging. Neighborhoods are complete strangers, noone says **** to eachother. Kids grow up with like 1 sibling if their lucky as opposed to like 5. families less connected Just a lack of people truly in your life that give a fuk about you. everyone is defined by their differences in society which has everyone at throats end and prevents any sort of cohesion, which boosts the happiness of everyone.

Relationships becoming a thing of the past. Dates too. if your lucky u get to **** some cum dumpsters.

Between people having smaller families, and other people not even getting into relationships at all we're going to have a lot of old single fuks that will be depressed as fuk, if their not already.
