Well normally I'd agree with you, but a lot of westerners like to play the silly game that Asians aren't creative, yet they copy and paste East Asian films. Like The Departed is a nice emulation of Internal Affairs. Believe it or not some of the most popular American western films where stolen from Kurosawa films. Culture vultures is what they call them. how hollywood depicts asians doesn't affect my direct life too much, or at least what i can control, i still do what i want when it comes to random things, including girls, never really let the outside stuff bother me........ but that doesn't mean that huge change in hollywood shouldn't happen, since there's still many asian/nonasians who can't get past the stigma.. have met a lot of non asians who had very deep stereotypical views on us, and these are people who don't even know any asians, the type to say, 'you're my first asian' 'you're the only asian i know' 'you're not like other asians' and other dumb chit, it's 2016 and to act like meeting an asian person is new is quite retarded, and sad part is, even after they get 1st hand experience with an asian person and learn that they're not like the media, they still go back to believing the hollywood asian depiction cause it's so deeply ingrained in them, many subconsciously use the media as a their main source of knowledge when it comes to things they're unaware about, so when these people who don't have too much experience with asians learn the hollywood version first, that's usually what they expect... and the image shown of us is nowhere near positive, very negative and comical, so yeah it will make people despise asian men before they even meet them

asian men are on the bottom in hollywood, but the truth is, the change that many asian actors are expecting isn't gonna come anytime soon, just cause you put asian men as leads in big movies and shows aren't gonna work, those productions will prolly flop instead because america is just not ready, they need to gradually introduce them as side characters and so on, showing that asian men are actually 'normal' and not always the joke... then, after they give more asians screen time and more respectable actors arise, that's when they can start having them as leads

Some people say that China and Korea are producing good movies. Well, that's partly true. A few each year. And how many of THOSE go on to earn hundreds of millions of dollars WORLDWIDE? Very, very few.

We can talk about the battle of soft power all we want but in reality, there isn't much of a battle. America is simply DOMINATING on this front, and until Chinese movies and Korean movies can penetrate into America like American movies, celebrities and entertainment that penetrate into China and Korea, it's not really a rivalry.

It's not like other countries haven't been trying, American culture simply is much better at appealing to others as opposed to Eastern culture. This is simply the reality.

Hollywood is run by white people for the benefit of white people especially white Americans. They have no obligation to portray Asian fairly or even not be racist, they can do anything they want. Hollywood is the soft power extension of the transatlantic power and powerful tool for war propaganda. There was a time when Russians were always portrayed as the bad guys, but now it is the big bad Muslims and the rising East.

All Asians need to do especially China, is create their own soft power and start exporting to people around the world. No point making amazing Asian movies only to be seen by Asian eyes, it would be more beneficial if the world saw it. I know Korean movies and music is actually popular in some parts of Africa. But they need to do much more, as Western media has portrayed Asians especially males in such a negative beta light.
