For someone with real social anxiety or approach anxiety, this is like telling them to just grow taller. It is not that simple. Life pattern changes have to happen for someone to get through this. It has to be slow. For me, I overcame a lot of mine by switching from an office job to one where I had to be social and engaging to be successful (teaching high school). Amazingly, I went from being a totally shy introvert with anxiety to very outgoing. Since then, I have gone back into accounting, and lost some of that socially outgoing side. But changing careers is not feasible, or a good idea, for everyone. I recommend finding groups or situations that almost force you to be social with a lot of people. Volunteer, join Toast Masters, take an improve class. Anything.

I'm also part of hugless/kissless crew. However, I do my best to ignore that and focus on more productive activities. It's enough for me to have a few friends and family I can talk to so I'm not constantly feeling lonely.
