The 70 dollar is the trick. While he did get paid for it, it means the 70 from the original 100 is unaccounted for. Unless I'm just overthinking.
The answer is 170. Why would you count the 30 in change and the 100 stolen? FFS

Derp this is correct.
I created an extra 100 dollar difference comparing two different starting points (0 & 100).

Guys.. guys..

If the minus 100 is replaced by itself.. what are you left with? 0.

A seperate 30 dollars is given out, what are you left with? -30

And the value of the goods? -70

Whats -30 - 70 = ?

If you take a 100 out of a cashier register real quick and put it back. Did they lose anything? No. Let's just assume this is the case since the question is calling for math, not accountability and other factors.

After you adjust for inflation in 2016, he lost about $3.50

We also need to know the Cost of Goods Sold (COGS), Inventory Costs, and Total Asset Turnover.

I do get where you're coming from don't worry.

Like if you pretend that the guy brought back a different 100 dollar bill, then the store doesn't care if the theif came back = therefore a loss of 200

edit: wait, no.. still just 100 because the theif coming back is a separate transaction

Lol, I'm losing faith in humanity....

This is so simple. The thief gained $100 so that's what the owner lost ($70 in goods $30 in cash). Ignoring profit margins of course.

100 Out minus 100
70 in but 70 in goods out

So now 30 in cash out but 70 in goods out

At first you would think $100 total right but we really need to know the cost of the goods to determine how much the owner lost as the price =/= the cost. That's why stores would much rather give you store credit than a refund.

This
the 30 in change is irrelevant since you already have counted it within the loss of 100. He lost the original 100 plus whatever the goods were.

One thing i can tell you is the dumb**** who made that post needs to go back to highschool english. I cant tell if the dude stole a 100$ bill AND was given a 100$ bill, then used the 100$ bill he was given to buy the product. Or if the girl making the post MEANT to say that he bought the product with the 100$ bill the dude stole.

He would walk out with 130$ in cash for ans 1 and 30$ in cash for ans 2, but the product needs to be readded so the question cant accurately be answered due to the cost of the shop buying product is far less than the cost of a person buying that product from the shop.

This would result in 1##$ being taken from scenario one and ##$ lost from scenario 2

If we have no variables as i added most of those scenarios to the question with my head it would be either a 200$ or 100$ loss.
Everything I post is 100% false and should not be taken seriously. It in no way reflects my viewpoints and/or morals.

holy **** this was way more simple than I thought.

Theif stole 100.

Pretend someone else comes in and spent 100 on the whey. That's still a separate transaction after that 100 was taken. So whether it's the thief or not doesn't matter.

The answer is always, and can only be 100 no matter how you look at it.

They were robbed of 100 dollars. End of story. The transaction afterwards has nothing to do with anything. Just confuses you.

100, but if you count the goods its less than 100 cause the owner bought the goods at a lower price and then sold it at a profit.

Lets pretend the shop owner only has two things in his shop

a $100
a $70 Item

Right now the shop owner has $170 in assets ignoring COGS

First action thief steals $100

Now Shop has $70 and thief has $100

Now thief returns and trades $100 for the $70 good

Now the Shop has $100 and the thief has $70

The shop owner has to give the thief change in the amount of $30

Now the Shop has $70 and the thief has $30 and a $70 item

Shop started with $170 in assets and now has $70 the shop lost $100

You guys are either adding or subtracting value for the goods. The $70 stolen and paid for the goods = $0.

The gentle took $100 dollars from you and then you gave him an additional $30 bucks. The store is at a $130 loss.

The guy who stole the $100 got $70 worth of free goods on top of the $30 bucks je got back. The theif recieved $100 dollars in cash and goods for free.

Most of you guys are over complicating things.

Take a look at it from a simpler perspective:

The owner loses $100 due to someone stealing it. The original question in the OP mentioned the same guy who stole it came back and bought the $70 worth of goods and received $30 cash back.

Now for a second scenario imagine if after the $100 was stolen, the robber doesn't come back, and a new random customer comes in and buys $70 worth of goods using a new $100 bill. The outcome would be EXACTLY THE SAME. So take a different perspective and ask yourself if the guy buying $70 worth of goods is a different person, would it still affect the owner? Answer is no.

Conclusion = owner loses $100

Except giving change on a new transaction doesn't put them at more of a loss.

I made this same mistake brah

Store lost 100
