At 17-20 I was in great shape. Could bench 265 at 150 lbs, shredded, vascular. Eventually got up to a good 170 lbs and still relatively lean.

I'm 25 now and got careless, quit going to the gym and spent the last 5 years drinking and eating like ****. Would occasionally get into exercise kicks. Heaviest I got to was 194 lbs. I weigh approx 160 now, but lost a lot of muscle and definition. Been cutting since new year but basically by eating a salad a day, or hardly eating at all. Maybe a protein shake. My experience is I have never truly "lost" much muscle, even in periods of a 48 hour fast. I'm trying to get as lean as possible to then clean bulk from there on out.

I find hardly eating (300-500 cals/day) easier than trying to eat below maintenance. Will this fukk me up or is it a viable alternative to eating 1500 cals daily? I don't care or want to set up a meal plan and eat boring **** all day. I'd rather starve myself. I'm still lifting and doing cardio, so if I continue to do this while essentially starving myself how quickly will I begin to see some changes? Will I lose any ounce of muscle I have if I keep this up? And even if I do, with muscle memory and a clean bulk, won't I see it spring back rather quickly?

Srs question is srs

I've been cutting about 6 weeks, started around 2400 cals(@5'11" 185lbs) and cutting them 200 calories every two weeks. I'm at 1800 now with three weeks left, going to just carb cycle the last week and figure I'll look pretty sexy at the end. Going to Hawaii Feb 1st. Cut has been hugely successful in retaining strength and relatively easy provided I keep up with my meal prep.

Can't imagine eating sub 2000 calories for more than a month, and still working out with any intensity. I would eat more calories and add in some long walks or some other sort of physical activity. Balance man, balance. But I lift 6 days a week, and do indoor rock climbing 3-4. If you're eating 300-500 calories a day there's no way your body is getting the requisite nutrients(macro or micro) to feel good and perform optimally. Even if your main goal is just to look good naked and you don't care about strength or feeling good, you're not going to lift well enough to really optimize that.

Edit: This was more geared towards the dude eating 300-500 calories a day and asking for help. OP seems pretty set in his starvation goals of 2017.

I've done a few cuts like this as well as multiweek water fast cuts while still lifting and the muscle loss is very minimal. The body is not dumb, even during water fasts it's been shown that the body recycles muscles by breaking them down and reorganizing the amino acids..

I would rather get my cuts out of the way rather than going months on a calorie deficit

Not srs.

Srs doe, I have been there. I know what it's like to cut hard. Went from 249lbs after a day of eating to around 174lbs in about 8 - 10 months. Hovered around 2.2 to 2.5lbs a week. Was an amazing feeling! Good luck op!

and to lose 3lbs of fat per week in theory and cut the time of cutting drastically

Maybe ill drop another 100 to 200 calories off my deficit and see where i'm at.

Im trying to get under 15% if not lower and would love to be around the low 180s before I start a bulk.

The studies I've read have shown that significant metabolic adaption takes years, not months. A recent study showed that something like 58% of the energy expenditure reduction was due to a reduction in physical activity. That is, people were cutting so hard they stopped working out etc. Not really pertinent to posters on this forum.

That said, after losing 40lb in 30 days, I haven't lost weight in a week on 1250/day, I'm losing faith in these studies. (goal is 225)

I ran a 3000 calorie deficit for 5-6 weeks last year for a show. Was eating 1100cals a day and doing 1500-2000 calories worth of cardio everyday on top of lifting.

It definitely felt like death and I felt like I had the flu for a whole month, no sleep, no sex drive, mind was completely focused on food and looking at food pics and talking about food. Went from benching 3 plates for 15 reps to benching a plate and a quarter for 8 reps and leg pressing 4 plates like it was super heavy. Now I am back up to benching 4 plates for 10 reps and leg pressing over 1000 for reps. Unfortunately its 1 month left and then back to about 1500 calories a day and 1000 calories of cardio a day.

I did for 2 days post show, then I went slowly back up to a 3500 calorie diet and bulked up to 250 and around 12-13% bf, then I started dropping back to 245 and cut all cardio out because I was aiming for 270 and staying sub 15%, now I am just over 250 again, doubt ill even get much higher than 260 by the end of February before its cut time again. I was gaining muscle and strength like crazy after eating regularly again, mind you my diet has been consistently close to 350g protein, 150g carbs, 100g fat
