Actually, that's where there might be some success. There's always room to develop the mechanisms that lead to the Matrix. Many movies (Terminator) and TV shows (Star Trek) have successfully accomplished this.

Glen Larson, the creator of the series, was a very successful name in Hollywood during the 70's & 80's. He made no secret that the story was basically Mormon's in space. Colonies were led by Quorum of 12, marriages were "sealings", etc, etc. I'd have to go into the whole LDS belief system, but the show constantly had those beliefs spelled out on TV. To that point, the LDS (at that time) were very much a "white only" group. Black people were not allowed priesthood prior to 1978. 2 & 3 were good movies the entire trilogy was outstanding and had a deeper story than what it still seems most people were able to digest. I do admit that 3 was absolute sht though.
