If the cop had his stab vest on he'd still be alive.

Erm, if you read my posts you'll see that I aknowledged the use of a tazer.

Of course it's a weapon. A non-lethal weapon used sparingly and to good effect to subdue that menacing gentleman who was brandishing a knife and clearly unstable.

I'm sorry but I don't get your point. The cops in that video delivered a positive result.

Don't be shocked when at least LEO'S in major Brit cities are all armed. Times have changed and they deserve to be able to protect themselves and the community properly
It depends what the overall focus of the police force is seen as. If it's to protect its own then you are correct, if it is to overall reduce the amount of death within the country then it won't have a positive effect. I am in no way saying LOTS of police officers would mess up, I am saying all you would need is more than 2-3 in the whole country within a year to do so before you're in the territory of the policy having caused more death than it has prevented.

I can't comment on that as I don't know the standard. I will tell you US cops are not trained up to the standard they should be, but it ranges a fair amount also. Cops in the US would benefit greatly from better training and on going training in my view and that of the cops I know who take their fire arms training seriously.

But you'd effectively have to arm the entire police force without causing any increase what so ever to the rate of accidents for the level of death to be decreased.
You can't ever guarantee perfection. Accidents can and would happen. What matters of course is the net impact on overall crime, officer safety, etc. I would have not issue if say the UK had a much higher standard for their officers to be armed, and would like to see that happen in the US too.

My understanding was cops died of being stabbed all too often and the powers that be dragged their a$$ on getting them those stab vests for a long time. I hope they are all now equipped with the proper vests. That may have been before your time, not sure.

Stab vests are issued to all police in the UK as standard.

However, standard issue =/= mandatory use in the UK. Police here don't wear them at all times.

Also - reports I heard stated officer Keith Palmer was not wearing a stab vest.

no he was right... russia, china, inda..all over europe... they dont televise NEARLY as much of their law enforcement as we do in the US.. add to that the fact we have over 300 Million people here and it will seem like a lot, which it is.
However in most 3rd world nations there ARE NO REPORTS.... do you know how many thousands of vids ive seen of people that get hacked open by machetes by multiple people and go unreported because the attack is seen as "justified"? or how about MASS muslim rapes? your perspective is off.

When more UK cops lose their lives then they'll prob see that maybe they should carry around guns.

- Countries like UK that don't allow people to own firearms could decrease crime by the thousands if the cops walked around with guns
- I'm sorry; I couldn't hear your complaints over the sound of all this freedom!

There's plenty of similar incidents like this in the UK where only 1 policeman is on the scene. All depends on resources at the time. I don't understand your pathetic machsimo view of what the police should be. Grow the fuk up.

Of interest, via the Mirror, for and against debate for armed UK cops:

For:

Tony Long, ex Met Police Team firearms

"We put officers in body armour, accepting they may be shot at. To me it shows a lack of trust and respect for our officers that they are not allowed to carry a firearm.

I did around six years unarmed before I trained in firearms. But that was in the 70s, when times were very different.

Now, police are facing teens on BMX bikes with access to automatic weapons.

It is rubbish to suggest more criminals will carry guns if police do. We now train far fewer firearms officers than when I started, yet gun crime has not slowed.

I don’t believe arming our police will reduce the threat of terrorism. But I absolutely believe officers carrying guns could help stop an attack in its tracks more quickly."

More and the Against:

To become the most basic form of armed officer, I think the course length varies a bit around the country, but it's typically 11 weeks, and that's for officers who have already trained as police officers and have spent a minimum of 2 years as one and have an excellent record. + The fitness/medical etc requirements are higher.

I was fairly sure it was mandatory for the Met on patrols, or essentially mandatory because officers who decided against it weren't allowed to then turn around to the Met and sue if they got stabbed in an area it would have protected against. But I could be wrong.

More guns, bigger guns, armored vehicles, more weapons, etc. Do you even hear yourself. Stop giving terrible advice and learn from what works.

Watch the video, the suspect was apprehended...alive. That's a success. A concept U.S. law enforcement seems to have an issue with.

It's lethal force used in life and death situations. Of course it causes more death. And the officers who arent justified should be held accountable. So lets not protect the thousands of law enforcement for the mistake of 2 or 3. And it only protects the officer? What? Lol, never going to see eye to eye on this. How many officer deaths or civilian deaths will it take to make it statistically acceptable to carry a firearm?

I figured you're comparing policing standards to other nations' policing standards. In other nations, cops might take you into an alley and put a bullet in your head if they feel like it.

Don't be an idiot. Read my post carefully

- It doesn't work to well here in the US because people have the right to gun ownership.

- In the UK there isn't any of that, so If the cops are the only one with guns, well there you go
- I'm sorry; I couldn't hear your complaints over the sound of all this freedom!

There is a consistent trend in the US (which I don't consider California to be a part of) that areas with higher gun ownership rates have lower crime than those with less guns around.

Harvard study concludes that gun control does not prevent murders, other violent crime

http://www.law.harvard.edu/students/...useronline.pdf

The study, which was conducted by Don B. Kates, an American criminologist and constitutional lawyer, and Gary Mauser, a Canadian criminologist and university professor, offered a stark truth: More guns does not equal more deaths and less guns does not equal less deaths.
