It's my understanding that with the introduction of the potato, it was the cheaper ingredient throughout the 19th century, so it was what would have been familiar to people in early Soviet times. I could be wrong, but that was my read. You're definitely correct, however, that grain vodka was the original through medieval times and is by far the modern norm.

Personally, I don't use vodka as a "neutral spirit", so I like the oily, potato-forward taste instead of the clean wheat taste. That has its place as a mixer, though.

Used to buy Tito's religiously for my home bar. Tried New Amsterdam last weekend and Tito's is OUT.

Tito's definitely isn't garbage. It's surprisingly smooth for a less expensive vodka.
What's garbage is Grey Goose--one giant marketing scam elevating a chit tier vodka.

If you want a good vodka drink Ketel One. Even Stoly. Mid or lower tier decent vodka is Three Olives.

You nailed it, vodka isn't supposed to taste like much of anything. That's why once I found Sobieski, I don't buy anything else. Its not like whiskey where I get different brands for unique flavors. Sobieski nailed it, so why keep messing around? I have some Crystal Head (for the cool skull bottle), Grey Goose and Ciroc bottles in my house. But the truth is I've refilled them with Sobieski. I literally never even tasted the Crystal Head. I bought it on a Friday and one of my co-workers was having a Halloween party that night and was complaining that she needed more liquor and didn't have time to stop by the store. I had just bought it on my lunch hour. She brought it back to me that Monday and its been filled with Sobieski ever since.

Its tough to use it in coke, etc. It tastes so much like nothing that it almost "waters" it down. No joke. I keep it chilled, so I know that's a factor as well. And best of all, its cheap as all get out. Bruce Willis is their spokesman, and they don't really advertise much if at all. But if you look close in a Bruce Willis movie, he'll be drinking Sobieski.

Russian Standard is my go-to as it comes in so many different grades. I also pick up Stoli, Ketel One, and Belvedere pretty regularly

Ketel One Citron or Oranje is fukn delicious too, I definitely recommend it for those that think vodka lacks flavor. It's flavored but still 80 proof, and lemon/lime/orange peel not some smirnoff sugary chit
