I can tell you right now that guy does not do any hard labor at all! I bet all that he does all day is drive around in that big payloader, which is actually kind of fun, I used to operate them sometimes when I did asphalt paving but I also worked my a$$ off. I am in concrete now, today we poured 3 floors and 2 porch tops, you HAVE to be in somewhat decent shape to do what I do, I have outworked new guys just barely out of high school that only lasted a couple days at my job because they couldn't handle it.

In software/tech the dress code is more than relaxed and there is a big movement to allow home office. Companies pander to employees and with millennials entering the field... oh lawd it's comfortable let me tell ya.

Eh, confusing desire with ability. Former VP level executive admin.

And IT guys could always get away with dressing like crap; executive suite not so much.

Ideally I would find something flexible, maybe seasonal, that involved being outside, or at least seeing the sky. Being in cube world with no windows feels like prison. Nearly always went out for lunch to at least sit in my car.

I wouldn't want it to be my job to be out in the elements day in and day out. If I want some sun i'll do yard work around the house.

but for those days when its freezing cold or so hot you can roast a whole pig on the asphalt, I don't want to be obligated to be out in that chitty weather.

Problem solving isnt something a tradie does? lol... I'd love to see you come down and show me how to get a 30,000 lb valve in an area where you have about 2 feet above when its standing and maybe 5 feet on either side. Literally the majority of our day is spent problem solving since when the engineers design things they dont really think about how it will need to go together.
Critical thinking? yup
Responsibility? If I **** up someone can die or have a life changing injury. I'd say that is a bit of responsibility
Planning? The project I'm on right now has at least 3000 people working in an area that is maybe 1 square mile. We have multiple contractors who are all trying to get a job done. If there isnt some serious planning involved it turns into chaos and people end up getting hurt or the job just doesnt get done.
Strategy? Same as planning for the most part.
Organization? The role I have right now means I need to know what materials are ready to go. If I'm not organized I look like an idiot when someone asks me a question and I spend the next hour trying to find an answer. In the field organization means less clutter. Clutter = people tripping on stuff or worse something falling from 100 feet up and killing the person walking at ground level.
Communication goes back to planning and organization. It also is a safety issue. Its been proven that incidents go up when people arent communicating with each other.

I'm not going to lie and say the majority of tradies have these skills but the ones that do are often very successful. You cant say all office/stem/ceos have those skills either. The majority of people go through life on cruise control just doing what they need to do to not get fired.

Different strokes. Before office work I studied horticulture and worked as a nurseryman. There were bad days for certain (greenhouse on the west side of a building in TX in summer...BRB 120 degrees or higher), but I still hate being stuck inside never seeing the sky.

Work in office and hate it.

Happiest was when I worked construction in summer duct sealing vents in basements.

When we finished at 3 pm on a Friday and cranked open the first beer at the nearby bar/Hooters; I felt fukin great. Driving around we got a tan, I felt like a man and had lots of confidence just because I felt good about myself.


Working in office when I'm off at 5 I feel bored, wasted energy and depressed because I sat in a chair all damn day.

Don't lie to yourselves wagies, ya know deep down you feel uninspired and like a wasted pile of chit on a Friday when it's 75 degrees out and you are sitting away... typing.

A guy I worked with was in my position, he quit prob a year ago.. couldn't do it anymore said it was so depressing. Didn't think he'd actually quit.

But he did, started working for UPS in the overnight chit from like 3-8 AM.. now he's a driver and said although it's hard, he's happier than he ever was sitting in a cube.

Dude looks like he lost some weight, has nice tan and genuinely happier.

I'm not talking about IT guys. I clearly said "software/tech". You're actually confusing IT-guys with men of Science, Technology, and Engineering. Making money on brainpower and innovation. Possibly for a moment I forgot I was on the Misc.

brb have always worked in an office but can change my own oil, wheels, suspension, etc. Bigger D and more skills than most tradies.

I worked in the field doing HVAC for ten years. Loved every minute of it. Been in the office for the last 5 years as sales/project management and while it pays much better it the the most boring thing in the world. It requires very little technical skill. Basically i went from having a specific skill which i was payed for to being a pretty face. SRS. BRB miss being on the roof of every high rise in town. Shooting the **** with my co-workers while working with your hands almost didn't even feel like work. Office life sucks. Plus in the field i met 10 new people every day.
