OP I think you overestimate the level of coordination we have as a species. In all likelihood carrying capacity growth will continue to outpace population growth as technology for food and energy production progress. Most developed nations are already reproducing below replacement rate but people are living longer; poor nations are limited by resources which leads to lower life expectancy even though birth rates are higher. Poor countries that achieve escape velocity in gdp per capita growth, generally see birth rates fall for whatever reason.

As we get too populated there will be a lot more farts happening and building up in the atmosphere and eventually the whole planet will smell like wet KFC farts and then eventually the sun will ignite the fart gas and incinerate everything on the planet...there was a documentary the other day about this on the history channel actually

You should realize that only a fraction of humans live like "us". Let's call us “the consumer class”. With current tech the Earth cannot support 10 billion of "us", but it can certainly support 10 billion humans. Many problems are actually solved by reducing or re-engineering our consumption models.

Tech characterized by some as the Five Horsemen: nanotechnology, biotechnology, robotics, information and communication technology, and applied cognitive science.

I personally believe automation is going to revolutionize the world. It could be disastrous or glorious... depends on how we handle it politically.

This would only have a small impact but a real one without extreme measures.(like stopping people from having babies.) Gender selection.
My sister has 4 girls. Very likely they would've stopped at 2 if the 2nd was a boy or the 3rd.
My wife's friend has 4 boys. Would've likely stopped at 3 if there was a girl. They say they are DONE. Then I asked if there was a pill you could take that would guarantee the next was a girl would yoYES she interrupted before I could finish.
My sister in law has 3 girls. Same for them. 2/3 were attempts at a boy.

It won't FIX any possible future over population issues but it would help I think.

But as others have eluded to. Somehow physically keeping people from having babies until a permit of some sort is not nice but the only real way. Think Starship Troopers. "Why did you join the war?" "I want to have kids, and this is the easiest way to get a permit".

Sadly having kids regardless of your situation or care is a freedom still. While people will tone down the amount of kids they have and plan more carefully, the masses will just keep breeding irregardless of any circumstances. How to solve over-population is a micro problem, overall we need to solve how we can start living outside of this planet. That's the real problem, the ultimate problem.

We'll solve it simply with anti-breeding propaganda and getting individuals in high population countries into lifestyles where they cannot afford children without risking financial suicide. Add education on means of preventing reproduction, and the pushing of non-human companions and you're good to go. Throw in some debt so the pressure of children really worries them and try to increase their work schedules so they don't have the time either.

The First world is already in a declining population.

Lol at governments working together and planning for the future... All they give a chit about is their next 4-5 years in office

Sure we have NATO etc., but even western governments ignore their goals (London broke their yearly pollution limit in 5 days this year for example), people aren't voting for the next 50 years of planet earth whether it's climate change, over population, deforestation, mass animal extinctions, they (including me) are voting for whoever puts the most money in their back pocket.

We'll all just let it boil over until we have to do something about it, like the financial crisis, like Syria/Islamic terrorism etc. etc. Or until nature does it for us, i.e. antibiotic resistance, or a new virus...

Starvation and a war over resources will sort this out eventually. A war over resources has to be fought in a way that does not destroy the resources. It will be fought by people and whichever side runs out of people first loses. The loss of these people also helps the resource problem so our leadership wont do much of anything to keep the death toll down, neither will the other side(s).

The spark for all of this will be some kind of destabilizing event like a new disease outbreak or natural disaster. When things go to hell it will happen very quickly.

It's already happening through feminism, pushing the same-sex marriage thing, emasculation of the male population, pro-abortion movement, wars etc.

The west is already there, and there are active movements going on to promote birth control in middle eastern / south Asian countries too. Which may not be a bad thing...

society is due for another virus that will wipe out hundreds of millions. scientists have been saying this for years now and many think it will come true. yes, we will most likely be able to develop and distribute a vaccine, but not after a large number of people die. just my belief.

Mother nature always finds a way. srs. Expect more earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis, new plagues, etc. If we can't find a balance it will.

Then there's always war which has the chance to significantly reduce the population like it always does.

It wont be enough. Technological progress is destabilizing the equations at the same time. People live to the age of reproduction far more often than our evolution intended and we live far longer.

Add to that equation our ability to override genetic disabilities and we begin polluting the gene pool with what was once filtered out through death before reproduction.

This pollution of the gene pool creates a reliance on technology and also sets up a catastrophe when that technology is inevitably disrupted.

Overpopulation is a very real thing. However somewhat difficult to approach simply from an ethical perspective.
1). It is unethical to limit any given person to how much they can reproduce. Because this infringes on a personal and inalienable freedom.
2). Considering the science, it is unethical for people to keep reproducing children based on the overpopulation statistics. Because if people insist on ignoring scientific fact, they are behaving in a very unethical manner to which is going to harm them, their family and the entire planet.

Overpopulation could be avoided by interplanetary colonization, such as on mars. However, this would only be an option if we can avoid overpopulation before we are capable of interplanetary colonization. In my opinion, there should be an international policy set in stone.... one that limits human reproduction to a maximum of two children per human being. Then of course regulated based on the stage we are in, in regards to planetary colonization. Obviously this must be enforced with some form of penalty. However, this policy I speak of, It shouldn't be implemented in a totalitarian/Orwellian manner... It should be gladly accepted by the entire human species, and that is only possible by educating the public of the world.

Fund more and more birth control around the world. Educated women produce less kids, it's just the truth.

Secondly, we gotta look into things like vertical farming. But I would say birth control and equality of education in poorer countries will go a long way.

tough question.

the only real solution is to be pretty ruthless and toss out some parts of the human rights act. castrations on those who should not be having children/have had too many would be a good start.

this is a good reason why africa is so fukked. poor people having more and more children and no means to take care of their well-being. even if they were educated, would it still stop their selfishness? that sounds ironic, i know.

1. We have food supplies that could last a LONG time, but it would require you to drop your McDonald's everyday. Humans are resourceful and can survive on very little compared to that ham planet that was eating 30k a day.

2. Land wise, we have a TON of it. Just go to rural parts of Texas or even Montana lol. I can't speak for China though. They are now spreading to Canada and some part of North America.

3. Experts probably have us living for at least 100 years based on technology NOW.Who knows what will be invented in 30 years from now that may help us reach a new planet or find new methods of developing resources.

I know its been said 100x already but stop letting those without resources have so many kids.
I just saw a news report about how many children in africa are dying off becuase of malnutrition. One mother had 5 kids under the age of 7.
BRB can't feed myself or my kids but I'll have 5 more.

Also, and I know this is a touchy subject but we need to stop trying so hard to save the addicts. If you OD once and we bring you back you shouldn't be allowed 100 more chances.

I already have it planned out.
We encourage low income/3rd world people to breed even more so our population can rise faster, this goes on until we use up all the natural resources and start starving to death slowly.

Overpopulation is a myth pushed to generate fear and taxes.

Drive from la to vegas. 90% of the drive is barren desert, uninhabited. thats southern california too, not somewhere in the middle of africa. Run some pipes out there and millions of people can live there.

The reason they dont do it now? There is no reason to do it.

Of course cities will grow, they have all the things people want and all the recourses too.

There is no such thing as overpopulation. srs.

Meaning, as humans get closer to carrying capacity, birth rates slow down. In general, as the life expectancy increases, birth rates decrease. You can see it in every country on Earth. In the future, I would worry about underpopulation.

Same thing that have being going on for years, you release a disease let it kill off a bunch of people then later on you release a vaccine to cure it, so the population gets smaller and the corporations make plenty of money in the process.
