You've been talking about pateks in this thread as if they are possible for someone to buy who wants what you consider a 'nice' watch.

Peteks cost upwards of $70,000, same goes for Audemars.

If someone has a patek on and it ain't a rep then they have serious money.

Also to buy a Patek in the first place you have to apply to buy it, you can't just buy one at the drop of a hat.

For someone who wants a nice watch that is high end and somewhat affordable, you can't go wrong with the Standard Submariner or an Omega Speedmaster.

A watch isn't even about telling time anymore really, your iphone or a $2 quartz casio is going to keep more accurate time than a Rolex.

However, a watch is the only acceptable form ofjewellery for a man (apart from a wedding ring).

Baume & Mercier crew checking in : Classica automatic, cost me around 1500โ‚ฌ and that's the most I will ever put in a Watch.

I might buy an IWC Portugieser when I turn 30 but I doubt I would keep it long, I've never been much of a watch guy to begin with.

I would rather sput 10K on a deposit for a hot car (Alfa Romeo 4C, F-Type) than on a Rolex, a Breitling or whatever.

BTW even fukcing Barristas wear Rolex nowadays.Even stupid chicks with no knowledge in Watch know a Rolex. Some people would take a credit to buy one and try to appear for what they are not.The brand has become absolutely vulgar.

They didn't get so renowned for nothing, they make a dam fine watch. You're basically saying because a brand becomes the most well known it becomes trash.

I don't like Rolex and I agree that it's the brand chosen by the nouveau riche and the vulgar.

All that, however, doesn't change the fact that a Rolex is a damn fine watch.

Been there. Done that. I've settled for a Hamilton chronograph and just kind of moved on from the collecting hobby after ive experienced many watches over the years. I encourage everyone to give it a shot. You just might like it and you come out with a much greater understanding of wristwatches and horology in general.

At the same time, there is no going back. I could never wear a cheap watch ever again; although, it doesn't have to be a Rolex.

I would only buy a watch as an investment piece, watches hold their value incredibly well.

You should invest in purses OP, as you seem to be a raging *******. Semi srs about the purses.

I see thousands of young professionals commit the grave mistake of buying Tag Heuers, Breitlings, Baume Merciers, and of course, the watch that labels you an instant rube: the Rolex Daytona. It's comical to see attorneys with Omega Seamasters or other nautically themed watches because a majority of them can't even swim, much less do deep diving (poon diving doesn't count here) or sea exploration. Unless you are a pilot, wearing a Breitling Navitimer is as ridiculous as you showing up to court in a flight suit.

Same goes for a Rolex Daytona: unless you are a professional race car driver or know how to read a tachymetre, wearing such a watch makes you look like an unsophisticated novice to the scions you are trying to impress. Sure these watches may impress hookers, strippers and hoi polloi, but in my eyes you will be instantly discredited.

If you want to dress the part, do away with the millennial popular option of the Apple Watch or other digital fitbit watches. Let's face it, you are not an athlete or training for the Olympics. While folks have different tastes, you cannot go wrong with the following watch makers:

1) Patek Philippe;
2) Audemars Piguet;
3) Breguet; and,
4) Jaeger-LeCoultre

If you are on a budget and need validation for your success, I suppose you can get a Rolex Daytona that is DATELESS. The dateless feature is key.At a minimum, with this watch you can carry on as a watch purist poseur. If you want to follow the herd, just get the standard Rolex Daytona which will show successful individuals that you are just an average follower of watch trends. Also, don't be shocked if every other person who sees your Rolex asks you "is that real?" since the Chinese have nearly perfected the counterfeit market on Rolexes.

Personally, I own three Patek Philippes, including a 1917 pocket watch. My current watch (that's on my wrist right now) is a Patek Philippe Nautilus, which I have owned since 1989. Remember, the watch brands I recommended are not fashion statements, they are legacy pieces.
8 to 12 grand on a watch is nothing to sneeze at. The Submariner and Daytona are both classic pieces that have stood the test of time for a reason, they are great designs.

As for getting a Daytona WITHOUT the date feature as you suggest, that shouldn't be too difficult as Rolex has never produced a Daytona with a date.

Can we please see your 89 Nautilus "Legacy Piece"? I'm guessing it's two-tone so you probably a little embarrassed to show it.

This is poor advice. As I said, if you go with a submariner, it must be dateless. I stand by my list for those trying to get an entry-level watch: 1) No Date Rolex Submariner; 2) Rolex Explorer II; and,
3) Omega Speedmaster Professional MANUAL with the Hesalite Crystal-Man on the Moon Edition (do not go for the cheaper Omegas, i.e., Seamasters) Honorable Mention: Seiko Grand Seiko-

As I stated previously, I mistyped: I meant to say a dateless submariner for those on a budget; however, I didn't go back and ghost edit my post, as I don't believe in hiding my errors. Despite my status, I am human.

As I have stated, if you insist on following the unwashed masses and acquiring a Rolex Submariner, it must be dateless, otherwise you will look like a complete fool. If you insist on the Rolex Submariner, you should aspire to the 18k Sub.

I may create a separate thread to respond to your questions. For now I will give you this:

(a) as for a car, I don't own one as I am in Manhattan. But again, go for something timeless and practical, recognizing that cars are depreciating assets. Do not, I repeat, do be a novice and buy some entry-level "status" car, such as the BMW 3 Series.

(b) as for clothes, are you interested in business or casual? Whatever you do, do not buy business attire off the rack. Shirts should always be custom made and tailored to your size. No worries. Probably half if not more of the customers I have that come in and ask about Rolex are in the store for another reason and are just curious about how much they cost, what makes them so expensive, etc... I didn't know anything about them before I started working here so its pretty dumb to look down on someone for not knowing. Even if its a younger kid or someone that says yeah maybe in a few years, I'll still try to talk to them and show them some and give them a book or something to take home with them. They are expensive, but then again they tend to hold their value considerably well, and can actually be a solid investment in some cases. Not to mention its a lifetime purchase. A Rolex will more than likely outlast you, and then your kids can fight over it lol. But seriously you have no idea how many people that come in have a story about one that their dad or grandfather wore, one that was given to them, etc...

Not to mention the majority of people selling them can't tell you much about them aside from the model and price.

Being from Britain, your idea of dignified dress likely consists of a puerile pink tie with a double windsor knot, buttoned down collar, ultra-slim-fit slacks to accentuate your posterior for the viewing pleasure of other homos, and maybe brushing your teeth. Unless you work in the square mile, nothing you can possibly say is worth a response.

The world economy is one of specialization. Consequently, your contributions may be more productive in threads about how to pinch your nose and rail a 3/10 woman, as that is an area of expertise which you likely possess give your U.K upbringing.

I understand that you are agitated that I called you out for bragging about your Daytona. Perhaps I was too harsh on you. For someone on a budget, I would advise them to procure a Daytona over many of the supposed "luxury watches" typically sported by rude naives. (I detest folks who buy watches that have no horological history or value. I have seen my supposed peers wearing Breitlings, Tag Heuers, Cartiers, Omegas, IWCs that are completely puerile. The average Breitling watch wearer for example, doesn't know how to employ the chronograph features or can't even tell you the model of watch they have (it irks me when someone supposedly on my status level can't tell the difference between a Superocean, Navitimer and a Chronomat).)

That being said, being called out and embarrassed as I did to you should serve as a lesson. You childishly attempted to impress what you thought would be unsophisticated bumpkins on the misc with your Daytona. Unbeknownst to you, there were connoisseurs lurking in this thread who instantly identified you and called you out as a poseur. This is an illustration of what I have been trying to convey this whole time: your Daytona will impress only hookers and "bros," but it will instantly discredit you among scions and other individuals whose opinions are worth caring about.

Just be thankful you were able to learn this lesson and weather this embarrassment on an internet forum, rather than in real life. From what I can tell, the worst that has happened to you is that you have been made to look like a buffoon on this message board (I have numerous people messaging me and "loling" about how I "rekt" you, but I don't take any pleasure in this), and this embarrassment has clearly agitated you. If this happened in real life, the results would be much more severe. (You may think I am exaggerating, but I have witnessed aspirational rubes ostracized to such an extreme that they have taken their own lives.)
