To be fair, I'm not very knowledgeable on ww2, have been reading more about ww1, the carnage was on a whole other level.

No one is deflating the American contribution. Just pointing out that Russia sacrificed more, by any measure.

Remember also, Britain was very poor because of ww1. There was significant pressure in the uk to appease hitler. If that had happened, the whole of Europe would have been hungry for resources. Let's assume an invasion of Russia wouldn't have been successful.. where would that have left the USA? On its own with no military comparable to today..you didn't have an army at all in the first years of ww1.

We have our own history stretching back thousands of years with conquests and coups, then their is the intertwined history of all the other neighbouring European countries - revolutions, rise and fall of empires, inventing everything, arts, wars, the greatest music ever etc.

Not only were we poor but we'd also been fighting since 1939 against a power that was being supplied by the US until you guys decided to get involved in 1941. How many of our troops do you think were left after 5yrs of fighting in Europe? Take into account that during just one battle in 1916 we lost 420K soldiers, just one battle in a war that ran for four years. So yes, thanks for helping us out but you were very late to the party on both occasions and helped sway the tide but you made sure you got your paychecks first before joining in.

I've been to Normandy and seen all of the stuff and it is horrendous to even try and think what they went through even though your thoughts are nowhere near the truth.

To say D-Day was the German's worst defeat is a load of rubbish. Their biggest and most important defeat was in Russia, then they lost superiority of the skies over Europe, got evicted from North Africa (bye bye oil supplies) and then it was sh!t or bust at the Bulge. D-Day was up to us to get ashore, the others were straight forward offences that they tried whatever it took and failed.

Hitler threw everything he had Russia, the western front was more of a nuisance but his ego got in the way and he paid for it.

Every country I've been to seems to be worried about only what's going on their own country...just like we do for the most part.

If that was true then it wouldn't be such a huge shock for the 5% of americans who actually leave the country and discover that other nations have their own music/cinema/food/sport cultures. The only true global American cultural export is fast food.We didn't learn about it at all in school, there's simply too much history to focus on one small battle. The Norman invasion, Tudors, Armada, civil war, industrial revolution, Empire, WW1/2, that's what kids learn. 1776 was one theatre in a series of wars against the French that culminated in defeating Napoleon. If anything it's seen as a French victory here not an American one. Of course it's a huge deal to Americans since they only have 250 years of history.

With only one decade in the history of America where they've not been fighting be it among themselves or over seas, I'd say War is their biggest export, fast food (as we know it) has only been around for about 70yrs.
