a couple 22 y/o's told me this as we were getting hammered last NYE. I assumed it meant they thought I was decent looking but not their type. Like calling someone cute.

Anytime you're called handsome it's a compliment, BUT "classically" handsome is somewhat of a sideways compliment--the implication is that you are handsome, but generically so (everything looks symmetrical and in order, but not special).

A classic anything is good (think classic cars) but they aren't unique or notable, more like sturdy and universally appealing.

John Hamm is the perfect example because everything looks right, but he's not exactly exotic or unique. He looks like a model in a Sears catalog.

As I said in my original post though, I think there is a bit of a racist element when people say classically handsome--they are talking about European features exclusively. An ethnic guy who is handsome would never be called classically handsome, he'd get something like "exotic." Seems harmless enough but beneath the surface it's pretty insulting if you're not white.
