Have about 85k left to pay back. Should work to consolidate the loans once I get a better job. Paying about $850 back monthly over 3 lenders. I took out the loans, but at the same time it's a crime that so much marketing is done to make kids think college and taking 100k out in loans is the only way to succeed.

Don't mean to say people shouldn't take responsibility, but a mantra is college will prepare you for the rest of your life and a lot of people come out and 6 months to a year later don't have a job that will be able to pay off those means. 18 isn't old enough to realize how the loans you can take out can change your life.

Refi'd student loans last year to 3.xx% with Credible. Had some at 4 and some at 6+. Works if you have ok income and credit. Can choose various terms and fixed/adjustable. Recommend. A++.

http://credible.refr.cc/CQQ9DGM

That link gets you (and me) some bonus $$$ if you do refi. A few hundred I think.

Highest loan amount I had was about 18.6k my junior year of college. Started making payments on them every time I had extra cash. Down to 9k now and have a years worth of living expenses saved. Could wipe them all out now but it would take all of that emergency fund which I'm not comfortable doing.

Yea loans suck - I should have done better in HS/CC and could have gotten full scholarships but my dumb ass just wanted to hang with friends/gf and party.

My brother is $85k in debt. He literally has no money to play with at the end of the month. It all goes to bills, and student loans. He went to one of the best art schools in Illinois to be a graphic designer, and did most of it part time.... so it racked up quick. Thankfully he had experience working at a music festival company while in school, or he would of been f****d while out of school. It took him awhile to even get the job he has now.

Im on my last year of university, at a private school. I received my associates at a community college, and saved THOUSANDS. I will be only $14k in debt once I finish school, but except for last semester I worked so I didn't have to borrow more money.. I basically worked enough just to get buy, and only have been able to save a little bit. I knew one semester I can knock out the hard classes, and had enough money saved, so I quit my job. My last year will be easy, with only three classes every semester. So I am looking for another job, and saving while attending. My hopes is to have less then $5K of debt when I finish. I will be selling my miata for around $9k, and using half that money towards the debt when im done with school.

The best things you young guys have to do is attend community college for the first two years, or an affordable university. Fasfa basically got me my associates for free at community college. Work what you can while attending school. Even if its just 10 hours a week, that $100 in your pocket. Find a job close to you, better if you can walk/bike save money on gas. Don't be a clown and spend all your money on food. Girl pays for half unless first date. Just be smart with your money, and it will be rewarding at the end.

TLDR
*brother $85k debt
*I will be $14k after school
*Work what you can while attending school. (As much as you can, while staying ontop of school)
*Community college, or a cheap uni first two years
*Be smart with money

TFW you work full time, go to school part time and graduate with $1500 debt that got paid off in 1 year. That was back in the mid-80s though.

Luckily we don’t have to pay interest on the loans in Aus. It’s just indexed.
I’m aboht to start uni and I have the cash to pay for it. But probably better off investing it becusee a student loan is the cheapest loan you’ll ever get

I watch some call in show on YouTube based on NYC about financial advice.
Sometimes you get people call in with like 900k debt and a liberal arts degree. That’s game over life is done type chit..

I took out one loan already. I just hope that I will take a major upon transfer that guarantees me a job when I get my degree.

Lol @ people with high college debt making fun of tradies.

Should’ve joined the military if you wanted to go to college. They’ll give you a chunk of cash to go.

Current HECS I owe is approx $120k to the Aussie government lol. Getting 4-5 degrees might have something to do with it. Luckily though, this last degree (dentistry) will take care of this situation nicely. A family friend who owns and runs several dental practices has a job for me lined up after grad.

Student debt doesn't blow my mind. It's people that take out 100K in loans for a degree that tops out at 45K/year that blow my mind.

Nobody is getting screwed by student loan debt.

Some people ARE getting screwed by the poor choices they made to take out said loans.

The only thing screwing them is themselves.

GI bill crew checking in. What blows my mind is how students attending on student loans handle money. Many blow cash at the local bars every night while others act like they can't eat unless it's at a restaurant. On top of that, many will change majors on a whim or joke about failing classes. It seems to me like the ones taking out these massive loans don't understand the concepts of finance and interest.

Most student debt on the MISC crew (srs).

I'll be alright someday and definitely understand that it was all my responsibility - that said the system is very broken and these schools criminally overcharge for a service that can now be 95% provided through the Internet. I feel like they are cashing in now with the terrible government loans system, so when it all goes to Hell they can say they did all they could to squeeze humanity dry.

The amount of people I hear with 6 figure or near 6 figure student debts all for a non STEM course nor a PHD is astounding. Some people just won't make it. Of course, it's the governments fault and they should get benefits. Too many students treat it as free money and don't plan or account for anything.

At least those in the thread with high student debt actually have something to show for it, like a proper degree or multiple degrees. Then the debt is worth slaving over because you will reap the benefits later.

What I did hate in college was the mark-up on every thing possible, like books/calculators. Then when they saw students getting second-hand items or substitutes they would alter the courses to try render those obsolete. That I fuking hate.

I joined the military after high school, did 4 years then got out. Used GI Bill for a Computer Science degree. Got paid $3,800 to $4,300 a month for BAH. Zero debt
