- lived in north Texas in 1980 for the record 69 consecutive days of triple digit heat
- still living there for the new record hottest summer/most 100 or higher days in 2011
- the year we moved north for my husband's job...Polar Vortex; record coldest winter for the area
- the following year record highest snow for a winter

Just lucky I guess.

Will say that Texas had much more violent weather...have had to take cover many times for tornadoes/hail. And freezing rain and ice covered roads are worse than snow having done plenty of both now.

At least Florida has a legit reason to freak out about freezing temps due to the citrus crops. My fave grapefruit is from Texas though.

Temperature is a constant, but acclimation is relative. If you aren't use to 40-50 degree weather, it feels much colder than it would to someone from cold states.

Surely the misc grasps this concept?

Yes and no. See old explanation I gave for why the same temp feels different in winter vs summer.

Third, your body acclimated to summer temps (like how dogs have lighter coats in the summer and heavier coats in the winter *edit: depending on the breeds some dogs actually have heavier coats in the summer which act as a thermal insulator) to shield you from the heat, resulting in the same temperature being much more tolerable.

I'm sure someone else can answer this more eloquently, but this is what I can remember from my biophysics classes a few years ago.

$20 in CA is enough to buy half the amount of taco's that I want

Looks like we will be hitting -40 wind chill tonight.

BUT good news (at least for the Northeast). We will be seeing a warm up with Tuesday and Wednesday being over 40 degrees.
