Oh, I almost forgot. I recommend getting some spare mags. Your gun should come with 3 mags. You'll want to verify that all three of them are functioning properly by running some of your target ammo through them (also, run at least a mag worth of the JHPs through at least two of them, these are now your carry mags) .

Keep your "carry mags" loaded with JHPs. Buy some range mags (Magpul makes 15 rd G19 mags and 17 rd G17 mags that will fit, I'd stick with the 15 rounders) so that you don't have to unload your carry mags every time you go to the range.

FreedomMunitions.com has pretty cheap stuff, it's a great time to buy ammo, lots of 9mm under 20 CPR

I wouldn't go that far. Certain home defense ammo has much better ballistics than others.

Would never practice with that expensive chit, but a brick of that when you are actually carrying isn't a bad idea.

Beyond that I wouldn't jump back and forth between different grain sizes.

Glock 19/17 are the goat. Personally like the 9mm over the .40 because of the recoil.

Glock 43 is a great pistol too of you want something you can CC.

You can't go wrong with Glock.

Congrats on making a great choice, OP. The Glock 19, as many have said ad nauseam, is the one pistol I would own if I could only own one pistol.


Those 147 grain HSTs are great defensive rounds, and the 124 Grain Speer Gold Dot are also top notch. Now for an AR...

Now i'm about to pull the trigger and purchase my first entry level AR15 within a couple days. I'm looking at Ruger AR556, and S&W M&P Sport II.

My personal choice would be walther ppk - metal, not polymer, reliable, stylish (james bond gun) and maybe a glock for reliability and capacity

I went with a Glock 23 for my first handgun.. Same size physically as the 19 and you can convert to 9mm with a barrel and mags.

Glocks are awesome though......The AK of the handgun world and I love me AK

I have an urban carry g2 holster for it for concealed carry but its just too big....gonna pick up a compact 9mm.

OP its time for a shotgun.

ETA: be sure you get together with either an experienced friend or an RO or an actual instructor and really get a full understanding of safety fundamentals. You really can't overstate the importance of being safe with guns (this seems obvious, but I've seen a lot of scary ****).

I carry a Springfield 1911 Range Officer along with a Ruger LCP2 in my pocket, but I would push you towards a Glock as your first. Not too expensive, reliable and you can't go wrong with it.
