The exact thing I have now, 4x4 4 door F-150. Can use as family vehicle as it's roomy on the inside, get 21ish average MPG, and I can use it as a truck when need be. Basically I made my vehicle choice on the fact that I wanted something that I would never have to be caught in a situation where my vehicle wouldn't work.

Rent?
Better get a mortgage first, son.

100K per year I'd keep my 16' GMC Sierra as a daily, trade in my bike for a Ducati Panigale (Dem aesthetics) and pick up a C7 Z06 as a weekend car.
I don't make near 100K and in under 5 years that'll be my garage line-up anyways.

I would have a USED low mileage Civic/Accord/Fit/Camry/Corolla/Prius that I use for a daily that I would drive till it dies.
Then I would purchase a used V8 4x4 with 60-80k miles.

There are many scenarios where renting is smarter than owning a home.
In the Bay Area, you can buy a home and spend $7k on a mortgage or rent the same home for $3500 and put your down payment + extra $3500/month into the stock market. It could absolutely be a winner to rent.
As you earn decent income you lose your tax benefits of owning a home as well.
I own a home by the beach that I rent out for $3200, but I currently live in a 3BR apartment with roommates for $1100 rent.

make over 100k
bought pre-owned VW Tiguan for $14k in cash
edit: and I rent my place, no interest in buying a home any time soon. As others said mobility is nice, have moved 3 times in the past 6 years
