Strong showing from the Misc Retard Crew ITT

As someone who teaches and tutors math at a college, it makes me die a little inside hearing elementary teacher brah so strongly argue for why he doesn’t understand order of fukking operations. Every day I see the results of kids having chit math teachers throughout their lives, may god have mercy on your soul.

No it's ambiguous you twink. Remove the math crew from your sig.

Multiplication and division have the same priority, it doesn't matter which one you do first. It's just that the question is written incorrectly.

It should specify if its 6/(2(2+1)) or (6/2)(2+1) making an assumption of either case is incorrect.

If you view the order of operations as an order ofoperations, the result is 9.

If you view the order of operations as an order ofsymbolswith a bunch of made up exceptions (multiplication with ( and * is different! ÷ and / don't mean the same thing!) or you get confused by the fact that the 2 is really close to the (1+2), you'll get 1.

I don't think I need to say what the actual answer is / the answer that every programming language / math package / computational software will return.

You are completely clueless lol. Please review literally what order of operations means: once you set it, the problem is not ambiguous. That's literally the entire point of order of operations. You are saying once the order of operations is specified, it isstillambiguous? Lmao wtf?

There is a reason why nearly all your computer software and programming languages are returning 9 for this expression.....it's simply a nearly universal order of ops. End of story.

Well said.

I might call it ambiguous, in the sense that I can't be sure of the writers intent, but if we apply the order of operations robotically, it can't possibly be considered ambiguous.

I mean, the order of operations tells you the order of multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. Since this expression contains only operations in the order of operations... I'm curious to see how this can be considered ambiguous.

Here is an analogy for some who are saying ambiguous:

If someone asks what is 7+5, people will say 12. Notice that people are not calling this ambiguous, even though they could in theory: the base is not specified, it is just implied to be 10. But 7+5 could be something like "C" in hexadecimal (base 16). However, we dont generally consider 7+5 to be ambiguous because base 10 is the commonly interpreted base for your average question "what is 7+5", just as pemdas or an equivalent is the commonly interpreted order of operations.

You're right that expressions (it's not a question) should not be written this way, but following the order of operations leads to a consistent result.

Do operations in parenthesis
Do multiplication/division in the order they appear
Then do addition/subtraction in the order they appear

You'll get 9 every time. You seem to be implying that the expression is not well defined, which is false. It's just a ****ty way to write an expression.

While it is true that some archaic calculators might utilize something different, the vast majority of current software and programming languages use something loosely equivalent to the order of operations used in C/C++ programming, which equates to pemdas.

This is beyond the point though. The post you were replying to was my post that "once the order of operations is set, that the answer isnt then ambiguous". That cant be argued, and your calculator example doesnt refute that. Notice that whatever specific CASIO answer is observed, it is not an ambiguous result from its particular order of operations in use (ie certainly that specific calculator will return the same answer- regardless of the answer- every time, determined by its order of operations- not ambiguous).

It's pretty much standard to use PEMDAS weighted from right to left as C/C++/Java/Python and tons of other programs do im not sure if IEEE was involved in deciding this, but since then its been the gold standard.

Pretty sure C/C++ (and most other languages) would evaluate this to 9, using the standard left-to-right interpretation of multiplication/division (and I'm not even in computer science, this is not my field). Says it right here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operat..._C_and_C%2B%2B

Also try it in mathematica (wolfram alpha).....gives 9

Developed multiple mathematical models and took it to the fourth dimension.

Can confirm, the answer is 1.
"The manlet is a savage beast that knows no moral bound. After falling in disgrace to a manmore, a ravaged manlet would not hesitate to come from behind and land a sucker punch/ swing with a rock to the back of a manmore's head. They are ruthless and you need to spend some more time in the gutter to even begin trying to comprehend what goes on in their minds."

I'm well aware this isn't a "real" math question.

My point is, and I will still defend it, the expression is ambiguous to the reader. This isn't a problem with math, its a problem with english and they way we write things. It can be perceived as (6/2)(2+1) or 6/(2(2+1)), refer to the wikipedia link I just shared.

Note the two following 2 statements, and note how they are different:

1. The expression is ambiguous.
2. The expression is ambiguous given a set order of operations.

There could be some discussion about the truth of (1).....but to debate (2) is simply ridiculous. You are going on now about the ambiguity of the original OP problem, but to repeat yet again, this is NOT the content of the initial post of mine you replied to*. I was simply stating that (2) above is false: when you specify the exact rules of the game- the order of symbol manipulation- of course the answer is not then ambiguous.

Since you dont understand this, I'm not wasting more time with it

*: Here's the post, so you can see.......
