Police have been criticized to death for operating in a self defence active/aggressive position, which has been said to be the worst possible state in combat warfare.

Anyone that ever participates in a home invasion, regardless of the time deserves nothing less than a full magazine to the torso. Maybe even a reload and another one.

Isn't procedure to shout "Police, drop your weapons, police get on the ground" when entering the building/entering door so people know to put their weapons down and know the police are on the scene???

Purely hypothetical, but I wonder if the police's statement/reaction would be the same if in this chaotic scene, the cops had been tragically killed instead of the homeowner when they responded without announcing themselves.

Just a thought. Don't most police units use loud speakers to provide orders? When the shots were heard, couldn't they just have held perimeter until they stopped, and then proceeded to give orders over loud speaker? Was rushing the home necessary when they heard shots, especially not knowing who they were coming from? Sure, I understand if rounds are whizzing by their heads, but running into a home seems a bit overzealous and careless, no? This way the homeowner could have opened the door slowly, presented his hands, and been taken into custody to give his account of what happened, and express that the threat had been neutralized.

You'd have to look at their SOP, body-cam footage etc. Not every department has the same exact SOP.
Obviously APD skipped a step or this guy failed to follow orders, if any was given. Time will tell.
