It isn't the sadness just surprise like ok yeah that guy was famous, I used to see him/her on tv and now they are gone. Makes you realize no matter who you are, death will catch up to you sooner or later. I got no feelings for these drug addicts that overdose though. There are people out there struggling with so many issues and here a drug fiend seems to be depressed coz no one understands him.

Phil Hartman, my absolute favorite comedian from that time period. Arguably one of the greatest (IMO). RIP.

Jeff was sad because we witnessed the demise, Lemmy lived far longer than he realistically should have but still a bummer to see a legend go. Dime honestly shook me, but mostly because of how it happened. That was beyond tragic and frightening especially because of many shows I go to.

One that hit me in the feels was Kurt Cobain. Even though I was/am a huge metal head, Nirvana was very special to me.

I'm not as emotional as I used to be. There have been at least a few times that I actually cried when a celebrity died.

Heath Ledger's death was not one of those that made me cry, but it definitely made me feel and it made me think, with the perhaps-with-some-depth-but-still-grossly-misinformed view I had on things back then.

I know that by the time he died, I had already noticed the extreme lengths that actors sometimes went through to deliver killer performances. It seemed to me like they would literally risk their lives to deliver a great performance or to get notice somehow. By the time he died, Christian Bale's extreme weight loss and even more extreme weight gain for when he prepared for, respectively, his roles for The Machinist and Batman, was one that was talked about a lot. Another one was Tom Hanks's role in Cast Away. All of those roles and movies were prepared for, performed, and released within the decade prior to Ledger's death, and they all gained a good bit of notice. This was at a time when I actually paid a slight bit of attention to popular culture and current events and what was happening around me in the world.

By the time of Ledger's death in 2008, a lot had transpired that hadn't transpired by...say...a decade earlier. 9/11 had happened. School shootings had become much more frequent. In my own personal life, within that decade (or really, just the 6 years prior to Ledger's death), I had sustained the loss of my sister (my only sibling), moved to another country for someone who ended up cutting out of my life before I even actually went up there to settle, I had developed cancer despite my regular preventative screenings, wasn't making much money, and things just weren't going my way. On top of an even longer streak of bad luck, I had a lot of negative energy, although I tried to transcend/sublimate it. But I had very negative views on things. I still do have those negative views, but they are not of the same nature that they were 15 years ago.

I am not sure whether within the years leading up to Ledger's death there had been any other celebrity (or specifically, any actor's) deaths that had occurred that I found quite senseless. Although by that point in time, I was over-engorged on the senselessness that I perceived in the world around me. But when Ledger died, and died right on the heels of having put the finishing touches on his performance as The Joker, I just felt like that was something that really crossed the line. My perception was that he died because of the stress that he went through in getting in touch with the insanity in that role, and the overall demands of him as a quite famous actor, compounded, surely, with whatever longer-term personal issues he had as a creative and being in the film industry at the level that he was.

The person that I am now, I would say that there was a whole level of issues, on top of those that I had already perceived, that existed that I would not have perceived at the time. Perceiving what I do now perceive, I would not have reacted the way I did back then. I remain, to this day, conflicted about my reaction to his death.

I had discussed his death with friends and co-workers. I think that the general issue I had was with the absurdity of his death and the absurdity with how the world works and the absurdity of life, in general. I thought that his death was one gigantic waste. I mean, so much can come of human life, especially when you have so much more of it to live that Ledger would have been expected to have when he was at the age he was when he died. It has been a long time since I've seen that particular Batman movie with him in at as The Joker. But I remember seeing it in the theater after he had died, and I remember that I really honed in on his performance for clues as to the meaning of his death. I remember getting mad because I just didn't see much, if anything, in the performance that was worth him dying for it. I remember being of the opinion that his makeup, a drastic re-take on the visual appearance of the character, was largely responsible, and minus that, the performance wasn't particularly great (or bad). I remember one co-worker agreed with me on this.

But, as I said, it has been years since I've seen it, and I am no longer sure what I would think upon seeing it again.

But one *action* I took, in addition to talking with it about people, was actually making (one of my first) Wikipedia edits. I added a piece of a professional movie reviewer's criticism of his role. It wasn't a particularly negative criticism, but it was one of the few (out of so many) that didn't exactly praise it. The piece of criticism basically stated that while Ledger put a lot of effort into the role, he couldn't really center in on the character, because the role was one that didn’t have a center, although I think the actual words the critic used were quite different - still, the meaning was similar to what I just stated. What I was trying to do with that edit was to add in commentary on the absurdity of his death as exhibited by his trying so hard for something that didn't deserve his efforts. That his death was a waste of life, for bad reason.

I still hold the view that someone risking their life by getting too much in touch with that kind of insanity in preparation for that kind of role would be a huge, absurd waste. But I also think that something else was going on there. I don't know that I have much to go on when I say this in terms of knowing any specifics about his life, but I do know that when people do a really good job of something, or they have much substance, they are definitely going to have haters. I think that his job in "Brokeback Mountain" surely would garner some haters for him. It was a less weighty performance, but even in "10 Things I Hate About You", there were hints of it - you could just see the gravity in his eyes as he observed the emotional intensity and vulnerability of Julia Stiles's character. The way I intuit things now, I would say that there was a quite likely chance that he had haters who would, truth be told, bear some responsibility for his early death.

But I regret making that edit. I am also mad about my emotions regarding it. On the one hand, I feel guilty for having made it, for reasons that shouldn't be very hard to infer. On the other hand, I wish I had the insight earlier to intuit what I intuit now. Maybe if I'd had that insight earlier, I wouldn't have made the mistake I made. The intentions behind my action came out in a really misshapen way. But then again, if I had the insight back then that I have now, I might very well have been paralyzed from doing anything even "as substantial" as a Wikipedia edit. At the end of the day, yes, I am mad, and I wish that I had had more insight earlier than I did. I am also sorry. But I am even more mad at the way the world works that would bring about such an early death as his in the way that I at least vaguely perceive it now and that would bear some responsibility for my having made the mistake I did and possibly caused the hurt feelings that I might have caused, although I would also tend to think that few people would have actually cared one way or the other much at all about it.

I am sure that he is still quite missed by a number of people, however. And yes, this also ended up being a wound for me.

Anton Yelchin had an exciting career ahead of him IMO. He was steadily becoming one of my favourite actors.

Michael Jackson - Just because he was so mega famous and his death was never something I could really imagine.

Princess Diana - You couldn't really NOT feel it to some degree. The mourning gripped the whole nation.

Steve Irwin is probably the only one I give a fuk about. Dude was cut down in his prime, not even doing anything really stupid like he normally did, just snorkeling. And he seemed like a genuine nice guy that cared about other people and animals.

Rock stars/musician deaths don't usually phase me, even if I like their music. Historically so many die prematurely, there's no real shock when it happens. Post-2000 celebs I give even less of a chit about due to their suckass music.
