SMASHED WINDSHIELD:Richards admitted to a Guthrie County deputy that he used a baseball bat to smash the windshield of a vehicle owned by a Bayard resident in December 2014. Richards, who was living in Bayard at the time, was convicted of a criminal mischief and fined $65.
THREAT TO "SHOOT THE PLACE UP":Richards was confronted by employees of the Sparkies gas station in Bayard who witnessed him stealing energy drinks in January 2015. Richards threatened them, saying he was going to “shoot the place up,” court records show. Richards told the responding officer he was “stoned.” He was later convicted of harassment, fined $625 and sentenced to two years probation.
TRUCK THEFT:Richards was "smoking drugs" in February 2015 when he rolled his vehicle, then walked to a farmhouse and stole a pickup truck. Richards initially charged with possession of the controlled substance, but eventually negotiated a plea deal to a charge of operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent. A two-year prison sentence was suspended, and he was ordered to pay a $625 fine and complete two years of probation.
HEADLOCK: Richards told a Greene County deputy in May 2015 that he had placed a woman in a “secured headlock” and dragged her outside, an act, she told the officer, that had temporarily cut her ability to breath. Richards was convicted on a domestic abuse charge and sentenced to a year of probation.
RAMMED A TRUCK: Richards admitted to a Guthrie County deputy in August 2015 that he intentionally ran his vehicle into a Bayard man’s truck after he was told to leave a residence, causing nearly $3,500 of damage. Richards was convicted of criminal mischief, ordered to pay restitution, a $625 fine and complete two years of probation.
LARGE KNIFE: Richards was charged with a weapons crime following a traffic stop in May 2016 in which an officer found a knife with a blade more than 5 inches long. The charge was later dismissed.
STORE BURGLARY:Guthrie County deputies in September 2016 obtained a search warrant for Richards' vehicle and residence in Bayard following a burglary at Sparkies, the convenience store Richards had threatened to shoot up in 2015. They found 130 packs of cigarettes, 13 cans of chewing tobacco and 55 cans of beer. Richards was convicted of theft and placed on two years of probation.
HOME BREAK-IN:Richards admitted he used a screwdriver to break into the home of his grandparents in ****** Rapids in July 2017. A Carroll County deputy wrote in a report that “Collin stated he didn’t think it was a big deal to break into the house since he was just getting his belongings.” Criminal charges were dropped about eight months later when his grandparents notified prosecutors they no longer supported the prosecution of their grandson in the case.
DRUNK AND HIGH: Richards was found sleeping outside the front entrance of an Ames Hy-Vee in June 2018. He couldn't stand and told an Ames police officer he had been drinking while using prescription medication intended to treat depression. The officer found multiple prescription drugs in his bag. Richards was convicted of public intoxication and fined $200.


Richards was found guilty of probation violations at least four times.

As a result, he was sentenced to a residential facility in January 2017 but discharged about three months later.
