I dunno about SD, but I've heard here in TX all the old cattle rustlin' laws are still on the books. You can literally get the death penalty for stealing cattle in 2018. Needless to say, no one steals cattle. Anyone dumb enough to do it wouldn't know how to take care of them anyway. Better off stealing lawnmowers, etc.

I'm quite ignorant with respect to having cows. Do you rear them for milk or meat? How do you go around monitoring the cows and collecting meat/milk? Like...how do you know it's time, and which cow to collect from?

The majority of my calves are born in the spring and weaned/sold in the fall to the packers union who will feed them up in feed lots and butcher them the following year.Total number of head is now in the 600 range but as explained below I try to stay as financially honest and frugal as I can due to the narrow profit margins. Also I'm very familiar with Gettysburg ("where the battle wasn't", love that sign) theres a pretty good mom and pop bbq joint there.Cattle ranching is a great lifestyle but at the end of the day its still an industry that requires land to be successful. If cattle ranching cant pay for land at market value (and it JUST BARELY does right now) it wouldn't be a sustainable industry. So to answer your question the money I make off the cattle can make the payments on the land. That said I have a couple other irons in the fire, I take as little money from them as I can so as to allow them to build equity as fast as possible so I can use them as collateral to borrow the money necessary to expand my operations.I'm on the Pine Ridge. Definitely has its bad sides but I like it here. A typical day is a pretty hard term to nail down simply because I do other things aside from ranching as well. I just spend my sundays planning out the activities for the week and plan accordingly. Terrible answer I know but its hard for me to answer. This particular tract is cut into 3 different pastures, a general rule of thumb for myself is about 1500 acres per pasture for rotational grazing purposes but many people do much more than that. Cattle theft is still very much a real thing, although its not really how its portrayed in westerns. The majority of theft is a neighbor getting a few of your cattle in his pastured and "forgetting" to put them back, that or people will steal baby calves when they are fairly new from pastures along side the highways and then sell them to other, less honest, ranchers. I put a pretty public and good beat down on a couple of guys that I caught attempting to sell my cattle at a sale barn a couple years back and haven't had a problem with it since.Yeah bro why not? I don't usually drive it out in he pasture unless I'm feeding in the winter time. Most of the cattle get moved via horseback but if I need to cover some ground in a hurry I have a 2018 Honda Rincon 4 wheeler I drive.So apparently the '18 F350 is chopped liver bro? haha jk bro, glad I could impress somebody across the pond

In the most remote area yes satellite internet, but it is an absolute joke. Cell phone service tends to be better than you might think so smart phone internet access is the way to go.
