College as a whole isn't prestigious anymore. Saturated with pointless, redundant degrees and you can get in comfortably with a C average. Most degrees are just glorified high-school diplomas but the respectable ones like in the STEM field still have high social value.

This includes Harvard and any other Ivy League school. The market has been flooded and you’re clueless if you think they’re teaching anything different at Harvard than state schools.

that's why my alma mater now requires applicants to write personal essays and then film themselves answering admission questions

lol @ people saying prestige doesn't matter anymore though. having profs that actually teach and help you, being surrounded by bright students who try hard, being able to build relevant work experience on campus and access to institutional/alumni connections are all ****ing huge factors in your intellectual development, social circles and future career prospects.

Yes, unquestionably it is easier to be admitted into academic institutions if you are a minority, particularly black. The sad fact about this is that it doesn’t help these communities, it hurts them. When Cali got rid of affirmative action at public colleges, minority acceptance rates initially dropped but then gradually increased to the point where they are now on par with whites and don’t need a race handicap to get in. Why? Because instead lessening standards to get in, the state was forced to fight the root of the problem, and subsequently spent more money on urban primary education projects and outreach.

In terms of just the academics, the prestige is a bit overrated imo. You are learning much of the same material whether you are taking Calc 1 at Harvard, or some typical state or private school, as they say "Calc is Calc". The one thing that is different is the tests could be more difficult at Harvard. But it's still mostly the same material being learned. On the other parts about career prospects, good learning environment surrounded by people who actually are good students, I agree.

Growing up White and poor is in no way, shape, or form comparable to blacks growing up poor. No there is no similarly whatsoever.

This is completely false and the statistics overwhelmingly show that the number one indicator of future income is your parents income. List all the ancedotal evidence and outliers you want, doesnt mean anything.

True, but high income also correlates with high IQ.... So high income/IQ parents will likely have a high IQ kid.

You could give a low income family a million dollars and their kids still wouldn't make it to Stanford because of the IQ issue.

didn't watch cuz no sound here. but regardless of school grades, kids will still have to pass a SAT threshold no? i know some get a bonus 200pts or whatever, but you still have to score in some sort of top percentile to be even considered...

I've met many, many successful people who seemed intelligent who had dumbass kids. Too many to count. It almost seems opposite - poor kids have to rely on their wits to simply survive, while the rich kid has never had to struggle and has life on easy mode.
