No one that ever became a person of importance "lived in reality."

A positive mindset, aka your reaction to the madness that is life, is the only thing you can truly control.

this is absurdly false.

A lot of people that end up "important" do so by a combination of luck, skill/talent, effort, and opportunism.

Being delusional about their life would only lead to bad outcomes. For every delusional fool that might somehow benefit, 100 others waste their lives because they didnt live with the facts of life. those are the starving artists etc

He doesnt have any evidence behind his claim that "nobody important lived in reality". what kind of baseless, nonsense claim is that?

People who become of importance typically have big advantages over other people. thats why they become who they are, for example just being smarter than most people, or having a lot of opportunity through dumb luck. delusion and denying reality is not a good thing

Disagree entirely op

Mindset is crucial to work ethic. Even if you will work hard at something whether you want to or not, mindset is the difference between doing it with a smile vs with a frown. That can be the difference between failure and getting promoted or a sloot taking notice of you.

Got it.

Out of the five things you listed, three are related to your mindset.
No, as long as he says "meh I'll most likely fail but I'm going to do my best", there's nothing wrong with that.

If you are starting a business for example, the fact is your ARE most likely to fail, because something like 80%+ business fail within a few years. thats just an acknowledgement of the odds.

That shouldnt stop you from trying though.

however blindly believing you are destined to succeed, and then making bad bets because you are delusional, is potentially damaging

its not either or. You can acknowledge reality and still make the most of things and do your best.

You can hate your job and still make the most of it.

You can understand that most likely when you approach a girl you will get rejected, but still do your best.

I feel like too many people think lying to yourself is the only way you can be positive and thats not true. you can do the best you can while still living in reality

true, yea brb going to the casino with a positive attitude will change the odds of luck.

Effort has nothing to do with mindset. You can do your best regardless of hown you feel about things.

Opportunism just means do your best when the time comes, but whether or not your best is enough is anybodys guess.

Again mindset doesn't matter if nothing is happening and you only face failure. Some people literally never have positive experiences.

You mean your mindset makes this your reality.
Mindset does not make your reality. I dont care what fairytales you tell yourself at night, they dont change a goddamn thing about reality.

Like I said which you ignored as an example: if you are starting a business you should.

1. understand and acknowledge the fact that odds are you wont succeed.
2. Do your best anyway.

Businesses fail for all types of reasons, each circumstance is different. I know its not simply because people dont try hard enough. Even the most successful entrepreneurs usually have more failures than successes.

Yea, fuk me for being grounded in facts, logic, data, and reality amirite.

blind positive delusion instead.

I read a book on this stuff, its called "brightsided". Basically about how American culture has brainwashed people to think exactly as you guys thinking, rather than see the world the way it actually is. highly recommend.

thats why you need to make an accurate assessment of yourself. it could be that you did something wrong. it could be that you did everything fine and it just didnt work out for whatever reason.

Effort has nothing to do with mindset. You can do your best regardless of hown you feel about things.
There is no way in hell that anyone who is aloof about whatever task they are doing task is putting in as much effort as someone who is cultivating a positive mindset about that same task. You might be able to "do your best", but people who succeed are doing MORE than their best.
Opportunism just means do your best when the time comes, but whether or not your best is enough is anybodys guess.
Wrong. Opportunism first and foremost means being able to actually recognize the opportunity when it actually comes. That requires having visualized success beforehand and therefore preparing yourself for that moment. Most people miss opportunities all the time, or they literally don't even see opportunities until hindsight hits them and it's too late. The people you see who seemingly always benefit from opportunism create those opportunities for themselves.

Your concept of reality is a little flawed as well, because for you it seems to simply mean the current status quo.

I'll give you an example that shows that mindset matters. I was never very good at math, it was my weakness throughout my academic life. However, it was necessary given the nature of my field. I could never become a theoretical physicist or engineer, but through countless hours of reading and listening to lectures on my own time, I got to the point where I achieved enough mastery over the subject that I've now published peer-reviewed articles that utilize econometric modelling and equations. Had I simply said it's all genetics, it never would have happened. No doubt my ability to devote that time to learning the material is partially based on a privilege that I had no control over, but the point I'm making is that within certain bounds change and improvement is possible, and those changes can have large outcomes.

I understand that you feel it's impossible for you to succeed at dating because you're 5'3 and have an average face. You can't change that, but you could make other improvements that would give you a modicum of success.

I think we actually agree more than it seems.

I am a 100% cold hard realist. I dont believe in ANY wishful thinking whatsoever. if its not supported by hard facts and data, its nonsense to me.

by the same token, absolutely I agree that people should make the most of things and do the best they can. I just dont want people thinking that walking around with completley irrational positive attitudes somehow will defy the reality of their life situation because it wont.

anyone who believes it does should use that to solve world hunger and poverty
