Of course... Arm swing, leg drive, inertia, leg bend angle, and timing play important parts. You can look at the physics and adjust your form. Professional coaches do just that. Usually an easy few inches. It just takes forming muscle memory for the new form once you know what it should look like.

The issue is that as we gain weight the ability to convert horizontal force into vertical (running jump) suffers.

The first dunk any kid does it the running non-dribble one hander. Also one of the first jumps to disappear with weight and age.

Hell no. I am like the George Costanza of dunking.
"To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda

Any recommendations to improve technique? I feel like I lose speed right before I jump

If you want a technique critique I need to see it.

Give me a running jump with 1 hand rim grab.
2 hand rim touch like you want to grab the rim and do a pull up on it.
A box jump where you jump off a tall box and then immediately jump up as high as you can.

Not everyone has the same flaws.
