Go to your local grocery store and you'll see hundreds of ppl there, young and old, all mingling along with each other. Cancel all the schools and have daycare open so the kids can stay there instead. It's a good thing we shut down the entire globe for this though. Wouldn't want ppl spreading it when they go to school, out to eat or have a beer.

Media just creating mass hysteria for some reason.
Yes you are missing something.

Early infected have the benefit of beds with mechanical ventilation availiable in intensive care units, there are only so much of those on each country.

Once that threshold is met you basically have to start picking who gets treatment a those who dies (triage). Fatality rate in Italy is close to 8% not anywhere near that 0.2% you posted, as they failed to cap the infection rates below their bed capacity.

Consider that in non developed countries, normal flu season stresses hospitals near its limits, and you can see that the situation can get a lot worse than italy.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...ess-italy-says
The Rome-based institute has examined medical records of about 18% of the country’s coronavirus fatalities, finding that just three victims, or 0.8% of the total, had no previous pathology. Almost half of the victims suffered from at least three prior illnesses and about a fourth had either one or two previous conditions.
The average age of those who’ve died from the virus in Italy is 79.5. As of March 17, 17 people under 50 had died from the disease. All of Italy’s victims under 40 have been males with serious existing medical conditions.

The Obama administration had declared it a "public health emergency" in late April, and by June, the World Health Organization declared it the "first flu pandemic in 40 years."

It wasn't until October of 2009, though, that Obama personally recognized it as a national emergency with the "potential to overburden health care resources in some localities." By that time, over one thousand Americans had died from it. The CDC estimates that between 151,700 and 575,400 people died worldwide from H1N1 virus infection in the first year that it circulated. These were not typically older patients with pre-existing infirmities who were being killed by the infections, either. Unlike the seasonal flu, the H1N1 almost exclusively affected children and adults under 65. It was quite easily transmitted from person to person, too, passed "by exposure to infected droplets expelled by coughing or sneezing that can be inhaled, or that can contaminate hands or surfaces."

In the end, over 60 million Americans were infected by H1N1. It led to 273,304 hospitalizations and 12,469 deaths in the U.S. alone.

I could also be missing something here, but Italy is a special case because the population is so old. Median death age was 80(iirc). If you drop a bomb on a town with 1 million there will be more casualties than one with 1000.

As far as I'm concerned right now, it's good to take precaution, and seeing the numbers settle down will ease the panic. However it's not good to act on hysteria instead of data. We don't have conclusive data because we haven't been testing. The media is acting like if we don't lock down everybody coughing their brains out are gonna flood retirement homes lol.

Herd immunity is the (only) future. Surely nobody here believes we don't all get it or get directly exposed to it one day?

The real panic is gonna settle in when everyone stops worrying about corona virus and realizes how fuked the economy is. Doesn't anyone understand the massive bailouts happening or about to happen? Once the world realizes the US is never going to pay back all the printed money the US dollar is going to implode. China and Russia have been stacking gold for years and will start their own gold back currencies. Prepares for a depression never seen before.

Politicians are pressured to take action because of how much panic their is. Nobody wants to be seen as the guy who didn't do anything.

Do you even Occam's Razor?
because they have many large cities with high population density, a third world medical system, which means their hospitals can get over-run very quickly from a large spike in cases. their people are super paranoid after SARS, so the government had to act. they also have ****ty air quality, and tons of smokers, which means a lot of their people are very high risk. It was also the onset Chinese New Years, which meant tens of millions of people were going home travelling around the country, which meant it had a very real possibility of spreading to every major city at the same time.

You guys need a middle ground, you don't want to get infected but if your healthy and get infected its not the end of the world. Of course their are always outliers and that what the news will show. Even a 2% rate of people needing hospitalization will overwhelm the hospitals if we can keep the curve lower we will be ok.

There is absolutely no proof you get permanent lung damage from this virus. The research these claims are based on specifically states some patients get 20-30% reduced lung capacity but there is the possibility of training it back up with cardio. This is the same thing that can happen if you catch a common cold and end up with pneumonia. Any news site that says it's permanent damage seems to just be spouting nonsense.

How would they actually even know it was permanent in the first place when their subjects have barely just recovered?

Exactly. There's also always going to be anecdotal cases of everything, you can read about one random woman in Italy that experienced something and say it's going to happen to everyone.

or just move to india

1 billion people

5 deaths.

We already lived through 2003 SARS which is 80% similar. 12k deaths and no one freaked. Now cuz of political agendas and social media - politicians are literally destroying society and economy to protect their reps.

Throwing every person over 65 into hotels would've been far cheaper. This virus is gonna be a kaput but the economic repercussions will last years.

news to the ears if you're a democrat. Won't help you defeat Trump in nov, so sorry.

btw: italy is full of fat 70 y/o smoking skin and bones men who have never went ot a gym in their life. Many live with their kids. Elderly society cuz few people have kids. Some of the most unhealthiest elderly people around. They were literally sitting ducks.
