All of them are great but definitely overhyped.
I agree a lot with this list. The variants of BC are typically terrible (except the vanilla editions) and Heady Topper is a malty fuking mess. I did enjoy Julius though but I would put some of the NC haze against it all day long.

And Founders...lol Year over year they get worse. Used to be amazing. I have some old CBS, outstanding. Last couple years, disappointing.

It’s both. It’s a crowd pleaser and ipa’s are pretty easy to make. However, making a great ipa is another story. You also might notice new breweries will usually brew golden ales, kolschs, and stouts for their first batch on new equipment because they give the brewer a little more wiggle room to fuk up. You can screw up your kolsch and just rename it a cream ale and everyone would be none the wiser. Conversely even though lagers may seem simple, to make a great lager is the true mark of a skilled brewer since there’s nowhere to hide your mistakes if you mess it up. With over 7,000 breweries in the states there’s going to be a lot of mediocre beer being made. I think if you’re going to start a brewery you better be damn sure your brewer knows what he’s doing and can make kickass beer. Middle of the road isn’t good enough anymore in this over saturated market.

Not yet but since studying for the cicerone and bjcp i’ve definitely packed on some pounds that i’m not happy about lol

You’d have to ask Peroni & Moretti. I imagine not that popular with MolsonCoors and Bud dominating the US.

Yup i’d say Weihenstephaner is the most balanced and the goat of all the hefs. I slightly edge out Ayinger because it has a little extra spice/clove character that I really enjoy. It’s worth trying the Ayinger weizenbock but vitus is superior in my opinion.

It’s been around since 2012 I think and is recognized in over 40 countries. There’s 4 levels just like the wine sommelier program (server, certified, advanced, and master). The cicerone is more of a designation than a job though. I work in the beer industry but not as a beer expert lol maybe one day if I pass the insane two day master cicerone exam. I’m currently studying for the Advanced cicerone and it literally is a whole nother level from where i’m at. Master level is god tier. Hence why theres only 19 of them.

Yeah it gets a bit tiring. I used to be able to crush multiple hazys but now I’ll have one and get bored of it. I did have an interesting one the other day though that was part of a single hop series using only french Barbe Rouge hops. Instead of your usual citrus and tropical fruit aromas it smelled like underripe strawberries.

Yeah you’ve pretty much got it. Hops have alpha acids in them which dissolve in the beer and give the beer it’s bitterness. When these alpha acids are exposed to UV light it causes a reaction creating a compound called *** (methyl-butene-thiol) which gives it that pungent skunk aroma. Green and clear bottles offer little to no protection from UV light and brown bottles can protect up to 95% I believe which is much better, but not perfect. Cans provide the best protection.

There is one exception though which is Miller. They created a hop called tetra hop that doesn’t react to the UV light so you can enjoy your high life and mgd without having to worry about it being lightstruck.

Fun fact about Corona...putting a lime in your lightstruck beer is a great way to help mask the skunkiness. Great marketing.

So knowing this why would any manufacturer choose to put their product in clear/green bottles? I'm assuming it's cheaper to procure them so it brings production costs down?

If so that makes it even more laughable that people will happily pay a premium over other mainstream light beers (Corona and XX vs Bud/Miller/Coors/etc) for what is essentially bottled skunk spray solely due to a successful series of marketing campaigns.

Pure marketing. I think back in the day a green bottle indicated that it was imported and would stand out among the domestics. I don’t believe there’s any price difference to make green or brown bottles.

Hahah unfortunately i’m at the mercy of what’s available at our provincial liquor stores and Beer Store. It has a good selection between the two but it’s not like the states that has dedicated craft beer stores. Last time I was in the states I could’ve bought some but I didn’t want an imperial stout in the summer time lol ended up getting Firestone Walker Pivo Pils
