this strikes me as odd. You cannot acquire a permit to hold a demonstration on a highway. Are they retroactively saying it was "closed" simply because some protesters set up car barricades?

Im assuming the city/police closed it and implemented their own barriers by blocking entrance ramps...which would explain why the highway was empty

No idea how it's supposed to work, seems like a potato idea. Anyway, the police tweeted about closing down the road.





It appears that the vehicle entered the wrong way up an on ramp, avoided police which had closed down I-5, swerved around support vehicles, and speeded up as it charged at protesters. Aftering hitting several people, it slowed down, before speeding off when confronted by protestors.

Washington State Patrol has confirmed that the driver has now been detained and is being questioned.

4AM UPDATE: At a 4am press conference, Washington State Patrol said that impairment was not a factor. It appears the car entered the wrong way on the freeway onramp before circling around and speeding up to strike protesters. The driver is facing possible hit and run, and vehicular assault which may be upgraded as questioning continues.

No, they survived and were taken to the hospital. An early tweet stated that one of them was in critical condition, while the other girl was stable, but a recent news report says that they are both in critical condition and undergoing emergency surgery.
