I am about to begin book 8. There are 14, lol. It may be my favorite series; however, I go through stretches where I don't read it for months and months. Then, I get hooked again and binge. It is definitely a grind.

Yeah, I've been tempted to take a break and read something else, including other shorter series I like, but I feel like I should power through so I make sure I finish the series and so I don't forget what's going on in between books.

That's often my problem. When I jump back in, I basically have to go to Wikipedia to get a refresher on the previous book. There are just so many characters and storylines.

I haven’t read American Psycho but I intend to read it this year. Do you think it is a better book than Less Than Zero?

My only real knock against the book was how dull the characters were. They were barely human, which is the point I imagine. At least with American Psycho, I imagine the depravity will be a bit ramped up

Yes, it is better. Even though Less Than Zero was written before American Psycho, I read the latter first. Forewarning, it's very graphic. TBH, the excessive descriptions actually make it a very comical, funny book, IMO. It is intended to be a dark comedy/satire of the 80s excesses of the yuppies and affluent. You are correct, the characters in Less Than Zero are intentionally supposed to have little emotion or feeling. It is an analysis of how deprave and disconnected society often is.

Awesome, I am excited to read American Psycho as I am a pretty big fan of the film.

I didn’t think LTZ was a bad book at all, and understood what Ellis was going for with the characters, but to me Clay was just some boring coked out copycat of Holden Caufield.

I will say — really impressive that Ellis wrote this at age 19

Here's an outstanding book for the fantasy crew; Rage of Dragons. High potential series by an author called Evan Winter. Prose isn't as good as NOTW but probably the best fantasy book I've read since and I've tried out quite a few.

Normally prefer my fantasy books to exclude dragon *******ry but they only play a minor role in the book so happy to overlook it. Classic revenge tale.

About to begin the 2nd book which came out last year.


I also read a book from each of Will Wights other series after devouring all 8 cradle books but the other series are pretty chit.

Lose the Resume ended up not being too bad, enjoyed the parts about narrowing down companies and geographic areas.

Good points on your “network” being real people you don’t just hit up when needed. Was not on board with the concept of work being bigger than a paycheck and encouraging to drink the corporate koolaid 5/10.

So first book I read this year is am educational book that provides some good ideas for use in a classroom. Doesn't need to be read vey anyone outside education but it's a good instructional manual on approaching the beginning of the year with tips on how to be successful in the classroom. It's not perfect but it is a decent start.

Book 2 is Don Quixote which is a well known satirical story about a "knight" approaching a world lacking in knights. A delusional but funny trip in ones mind. The book was an enjoyable read and would have been an amazing 350 page book but was quite long winded.

The Mike Shel books are sword and sorcery style books and ended up being better than I thought. I had book one in my kindle for most of year before I finally read it. It has a somewhat flawed main character that is dealing with a type of PTSD from a previous mission. Book three was supposed to be out last year, but has not been published yet.

Any Glen Cook fans? I can definitely recommend the entire Garrett P.I. series (sort of fantasy noir detective novels). Some of my favorite books.

I also recommend the better-known Discworld series by Sir Terry Pratchett.

I liked the first four or five of the Glen Cook - Black Company books. Once they shifted narrator to Murgen or whatever his name was, they went downhill. He seemed too whiny

At 57 hours in audio I've been picking at this one for a LONG time and also had several library holds push it to the side. Another epic installment in the series, Sanderson managed to crank the stakes even higher while finally starting to show the first hints of his endgame. And no spoilers but the showdown he teases from the very beginning of the book gets paid off in spades in the finale.

He mentioned in the intro to this one that the proposed 10 book series is two 5 book blocks of story so the next book may have some deeper answers.

I need some good books to immerse myself in, watching too much tv and using social media way too much, need to get back to the book.

I enjoy fantasy like game of thrones, fictional history like Steven press field stuff

Also like travel books like bill Bryson stuff

Wouldn’t even mind some suggestions similiar to like a James Bond or Indiana Jones style read

Fantasy - did you read the First Law trilogy by James Abercrombie? He nails the gritty fantasy vibe - I don't normally like fantasy at all and his books hooked me hard.

For nonfiction check out the books of Mary Roach - she's a nonfiction writer like bryson: picks a topic and writes a book about exploring it as a novice. If one of her books sounds interesting to you I can almost guarantee you'll enjoy it.

Das it. I felt this was the slowest of the four books so far, but it had some of the best moments of the series. A bit of a slog at times, but WELL worth it.

Rage of Dragons and the sequel Fires of Vengeance dead srs.

9/10 series so far and only loses 1 mark for flirting very briefly with wokeness as modern fantasy and Sci fi authors tend to do. Fortunately it's not ham-fisted and lasts only a few lines.

Uses a caste system a lot like the red rising series and is fundamentally a revenge tale in the same vein as the movie gladiator. It's good chit.

It was about time I read in depth about one of the greatest historic battles the world has known. It was an exciting and very informative read. It was fascinating to read about the squares that the British infantry formed to repel the French cavalry, and the scissors, paper, stone game that the infantry formations had to play in terms of reacting to the various methods of enemy threat.

3 books down and still In January. I will try and document each book in this thread as I finish it (which I didn't do last year).

Check out Bernard Cornwell for historical fiction. Nearly all of his books are gritty like the First Law series.

The topic of trauma cleaning is definitely interesting and I mostly liked the characters but the story was a tad bit too ridiculous.
