Eh I wouldn't say it's ahead of mma. Mma has less rounds but the rounds are more intense due to it being more of a full body workout

I'm guessing that the slow-twitch "athletes" (or fans) will argue 'endurance sports' and the fast-twitch "athletes" (or fans) will argue power/strength sports.

My uncle probably would have told me that boxing requires a unique combination of both, plus superior mental toughness and a very high pain threshold tolerance.
Fact: My first-generation uncle was a boxer who fought Sugar Ray Robinson! He also fought in the war, sacrificing the career he deeply loved, so people could have the right to freedom.

Let's show RESPECT for the POLICE and ALL FIRST RESPONDERS by helping to keep THEM SAFE AND SOUND, and thereby able to PROTECT US!

Using more than your hands to fight doesn’t make it more intense.

It's very subjective, sometimes I think endurance sports get overlooked. I'm sure they are brutal at the top level, though just pain for mile after mile after mile and you can't let up because someone's on your ass.

I coached boxing.

Of 100 students that come in, maybe 30 will keep coming back. Of that 30, maybe 5 will go on to have a fight.

So only about 5/100 have enough of the qualities to make it to a fight.

Most students don’t have the discipline it takes to put in that gruesome work, maybe for 1 day, and maybe for weeks and months but for an entire year pushing your body to that limit? I guess endurance athletes have the same problem.

And then if some students have the discipline, many of them don’t have the physical or mental toughness, they don’t have that fight in them. Most people have never been properly punched, yet alone by a trained guy.

Then finally, even if the student has both of the above, many won’t have the talent for it, speed, endurance, power, chin, reflexes etc. You can suck at tennis and still enjoy it, nobody enjoys getting trolled in the ring.

That's what I was thinking. Skating by far is the most skill-required sport and nothing is even close. But OP said physically demanding, but I think skating still needs a mention.

Wrestling (collegiate, freestyle, greco). Several college or senior level wrestlers have commented on how wrestling is more grueling and demanding than mma. Couture, Liddell, Sonnen, Lindland for example.
"Seen in the light of evolution, biology is, perhaps, intellectually the most satisfying and inspiring science. Without that light it becomes a pile of sundry facts -- some of them interesting or curious but making no meaningful picture as a whole."
