I think they your student loans should be forgiven ONLY if you file for bankruptcy.
This body holding me, be my reminder here that I am not alone.
Makes me feel eternal, all this Pain is an Illusion.

Student loans should really be based on future earning potential. There are some newer private lenders who do this. They are not backed by any government schemes so they assume 100% of the risk and they don't require you to have any net worth. The amount you can borrow from them is based off their calculation of your future earnings and probably based off loan performance of previous students.
I got a student loan from prodigy finance that do this. They lend mostly from MBA, engineering programs and only specific schools and some other degrees with high exit salaries.
Prodigy finance has a default rate of less than 1%... that's for an unsecured student loan... it's absolutely insane. Default rates for traditional student loans I believe are more like 10-15%.
It just seems like such a simple ****ing solution but yeah student loans should be based off future earning potential.
If you want to do some liberal arts degree that costs 80k with an exit salary of 18,000 a year you should have to fund that yourself.

We shouldn't feel too bad for students with tons of debt. Lots of wealth redistribution is done based on need. My freshman year roommate went to our private university for free based on low income, and had a scholarship given by the university to pay for his room and board (at today's rate it's $65K a year including room and board). His GPA and SAT scores were slightly lower than mine. Ditto for a few people I knew on just that one dorm hall.

With the added years of secondary education needed by most to earn a decent income + years paying off student debt before feeling financially able to start a family [married w/children] more people just aren't ever forming families at all. But of course people won't wait until they are almost 30 to become sexually active, so lots of single parent families. Not the only reason, but a reason.
katya's US education Cliffs:
- universal education was enacted to build a workforce fit for our relatively new industrial employment
- schools in lower income areas were underfunded/poorly run + concentration of lower income students [because schools zoned by locality] meant the students less prepared for school and w/less home support for education were predominantly in these schools = social promotion of students that haven't learned the material
- employers find that a high school education doesn't guarantee an employee who is work ready and a huge trend begins of requiring a college degree for most jobs that aren't trades and pay enough to survive
- a college education was previously something mostly available to more wealthy people, or at least more industrious, the latter of which benefited a lot from public colleges and grants for poor students
- politicians cut funding for public colleges and grants by a lot:
No federal program suffered deeper cuts than student aid. Spending on higher education was slashed by some 25 percent between 1980 and 1985. In raw dollar figures, cuts totaled $594 million in student assistance and $338 million in Pell grants.

A decade since the Great Recession hit, state spending on public colleges and universities remains well below historic levels, despite recent increases. Overall state funding for public two- and four-year colleges in the 2017 school year [that is, the school year ending in 2017] was nearly $9 billion below its 2008 level, after adjusting for inflation. The funding decline has contributed to higher tuition and reduced quality on campuses as colleges have had to balance budgets by reducing faculty, limiting course offerings, and in some cases closing campuses. At a time when the benefit of a college education has never been greater, state policymakers have made going to college less affordable and less accessible to the students most in need.

Nearly every state has shifted costs to students over the last 25 years, with the most drastic shift occurring since the onset of the Great Recession. In 1988, average tuition exceeded per-student state expenditures in only two states: New Hampshire and Vermont. By 2008, that number had grown to ten states. In 2016 [the latest year for which there are data], tuition revenue exceeded state and local funding for higher education in half the states. And in nine states — Alabama, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Michigan, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Vermont — tuition revenue was at least twice state and local funding

- a decision was made to paper over the gap created by less taxpayer funding with government backed non-dischargeable loans instead
- with loans available to nearly everyone + a population that was primed to believe that a college degree was their ticket to the American Dream = high demand for college education + tuition climbed higher and higher
The above is why I think we should only have mandatory education through 8th grade or age 18; meaning you achieve mastery at an 8th grade level at least even if it takes you until adulthood.
After that students should be able to apply to secondary programs, trades of various kinds or college prep, supported w/taxpayer funding. This secondary education though would be predicated on the student applying themselves to reach that 8th grade level first and if they quit or can't hack it then that's on them.
