Also, I doubt you are "grinding". Most likely you just work to keep your current lifestyle. Learning new and difficult subjects is what I consider to be grinding.

The problem is that too many people are going to college.
When you had 20% of people going to college and 20% of the job market was college level jobs, everything worked out.
Now you have 50-60% of people going to college, you still only have 20% of the job market being college level jobs and a bunch of non college level jobs now asking for a degree.
The top 20% are still getting the top 20% of jobs and everybody else is getting the same jobs that they would have done before (that didn't used to need a degree, but now do), but with a lot of debt added.
The biggest problem is that people who are in the 45%-60% percentiles are graduating and think that they are going to get the same careers as the 85%+ people, because they are a "graduate".
We didn't gain lots more academically gifted people in the last 40 years, we just sent far more less able people to college.

The FREEDOM of 'Murica failed at leaving the university system, disease-care, tech and immigration to the libertarian market.
With universities, they're just scamming those who do not belong in the class of international markets with international debt.
2% or so belong in world class universities. The rest of 5% or so can specialize in a disciplined system.
Others can benefit from broader education and frameworks to work with. They do not need to try to train for head software engineer Google interviews or top doctorates.
The military scholarships reflect this.

We are taught growing up that it's level of education that will determine your success when in reality it is skills that determine your success. Also you are told the purpose is to get good grades and get a degree, not learn and refine skills. Kind of reminds me of these Karate schools where all you really have to do is attend and do what the instructor tells you and test you get the next belt until you'll become a black belt.
Just because you attend a program at a facility that last for 4 years and get a participation letter they call a degree doesn't mean you got an education or went to college. Even if you do go to a legit school, if you don't retain what they taught you and know how to apply it, it's just a waste.

Yeah, this thread was depressing. I went to school for the one thing I wanted to devote my life to. I already make around 75k with the combination of a stipend and casual work, I don't need to work full time ATM to afford a nice place, car, and some luxuries, and I've met a few great girls in the similar academic niche and should I be successful procuring an academic job I'll start on at least mid 80k. At least.
You can make it without college, you can make it with college, but the key is not to conflate vocation with purpose. Spend some time figuring out how to synthesize the two.

Imagine creating your own set of requirements and rules for a so called education piece of paper. This is why I blame the boomers for everything. They instilled these ideas where they set the rules and red tape. To hell with all of that, we are a clump of molecules floating through space at incredible speed. The biggest problem is that people who are in the 45%-60% percentiles are graduating and think that they are going to get the same careers as the 85%+ people, because they are a "graduate".
We didn't gain lots more academically gifted people in the last 40 years, we just sent far more less able people to college.
