Haven't played the game but instantly lost interest when I heard it's a "souls game". And I strong disagree with the OP when it comes to Valorant LOL but I hard agree that out of all the hype and all the clips out there, I've not seen anything that looks compelling. Looks just likea copypaste of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Nioh. I even watched a stream of the whole beginning of the game and the exposition and story telling looked and sound rushed. The monsters look cool but the environment all looks the same. Dark, gray, and dead. and I just keep seeing players unli rolling around dodging hits from monsters, hit back once, then rinse and repeat. I'm willing to bet even without playing it that Ghost of Tsushima has a much better melee system than ER.

If that's considered a 10/10 game these days and games like CP 2077 with great exposition, world building, animation and visuals (especially with the added ones in patch 1.5) are hated because of bugs, and players don't have the patience to read the shards and listen to the radio and the in-game world news to be fully immersed, then I'm proud to be in the minority when it comes to taste in games.

Most of your impressions are off base. The world is very unique and beautiful in an artistic way, but of low fidelity. Its gotta be the best world I've seen in a game. I've never played other souls games, but the combat is reminiscent of the witcher 3 with more focus on defense. Never played ghost of tsushima, but I've played all bethesda/cdpr/ubisoft rpgs and this is definitely the better of the bunch in that arena. I'd consider this game a worthy buy, by any measure.

I also love CP2077 because I bought it for $10 and knew it had bugs, but Elden Ring IS GOTY material.

I've seen the fights in ER, and honestly the fight system can't compare to Ghost of Tsushima. I've also played Witcher 3 and I don't recall Geralt unli rolling like that. The dodges in Witcher 3 actually looked cool and the fighting system was dynamic.

As someone who's played souls games and Tsushima(which is my 2nd favorite ps4 exclusive) you absolutely cannot compare the fighting in both games. They each give a different feel for combat and I can assure you while souls games don't have as many moves and techniques, they have many different ways to do combat with varying weapons, abilities and builds. The combat in Tsushima was extremely fluid and fun but towards the end of the game was starting to feel repetitive. Meanwhile I've spent ungodly hours in souls games, especially bloodborne having a ton of fun with the combat.

You have to play both to know what I mean, it's difficult to translate both feelings into words. But I assure you, the Elden Ring is not much outright story and narrative. There's a reason it's the #1 game in the world and it's due to the fun gameplay.

Believe me, I contemplated on buying Elden Ring that's why I watched a ton of clips from it and some streams, but I didn't really feel the "different ways to do combat" that you said. Most of what I remember from the clips I watched are just people rolling over and over again and their own hits doesn't even look to have any combinations, just usually 1 hit with generic looking animation. The most fun clip that I saw was some dude wearing underwear only and apparently it's pretty OP if you don't wear armor, but yep same generic formula, roll over, dodge, hit and repeat.

I legitimately have watched about 4 hours of game play at this point. Have yet to see anything that makes me want this game.

I also think FromSoftware are pretty untouchable when it comes to art direction.

If there’s any lasting legacy from the Soulsbourne games, I hope it’s that: A) great feeling, fun gameplay is paramount, and B) there’s more to creating amazing looking games than just top of the line gfx.

4 hours of a game? I haven't watched 4 mins combined, ruins the experience for me if I see so much of the game before playing.

The rush, the reflexes, the coming up with your own optimized build and having a ton of fun can't come from watching someone else play. Last post on this topic but you need to play the game for it to click. I could have watched a bloodborne video and come up with the same reaction

I don't go in and spend $$ on games blindly. First I check the trailer, and then screenshots, and then some official release gameplay. If I'm still meh after checking those three (which I was with ER) then I go to check some actual gameplay from other gamers, and yep if I'm still meh after all that. Then the game is really not for me.

It's a different thing when it comes to other games like CP2077, Ghost of Tsushima, etc where the trailer and just a few readings from it is enough to get me hooked. Nothing about ER looks appealing to me. I mean it's cool that many players love it, in our world with so many fukk up things, It's cool that people find something that they legit have fun with. My opinion was on the game alone, it's not to bash the taste of games of the people who love it. We all have different cups of tea.

I think seeing the value and appeal for something that isn't necessarily appealing for you, isn't something everyone is capable of.

Like I didn't get super into RDR2. Might give it another try someday. But I absolutely think there isn't much out there like it, and it does some things very very well.
