You really never fail to show your stupidity and ignorance in each and everyone one of yours posts.

Anyways, on the topic at hand.

I agree that if things can be done at home, let it be done - if anything, allow for those that want to come in to come in and those that don't, to stay remote.

Just hope it doesn't bite any of these employees in the butt in the end when Apple (and others like it) decide to be extra and fire all these employees on a power trip.

LOL

The AM porta potty visit is the best man. They're usually still clean enough to hang out a little longer and smoke weed.

No salary can make up for what you earn living the tradie life.

Never said it did (in this thread or the similar one in the gaming section). But all the boomers working on their second heart attack locked away in their office seem to think that way of life has to apply to everyone.

I fall in at the trailing edge of the boomers, been working from home (7:00 - 3:30) for the past two years and at the most will be going in one day a week in the future. Also, can visit family/friends and work remotely from there.

It cost the company more money to have everyone come in. Everything from power usage to insurance so there must be a reason.
A qualified engineer at Apple wouldn't even show up on the 11th because they would already have another job offer likely with a higher salary. That's just the state of the IT world right now.

Source: I am an IT Systems Engineer at a reputable company. My employer started mandating that employees return to the office on a hybrid remote/in-office schedule. Once people started returning to the office, us IT people got a happy hour going one night. I went out and got to talking with one of the directors who heads development and had a few open positions on his team. He had a few drinks in him, and feeling a little tipsy - plus I have known him for a while, so we have some raport - he told me that he had to give out offers for some of those positions that would exceed some of his best senior developers, even though they were less qualified and not applying for senior developer positions. He was actually kind of distraught over having to do this and not being able to give his committed and dedicated employees a raise that compensates with the realities of the market. Well, he straight up told me to say **** company loyalty and to start putting my feelers out to see what I was worth on the current market because these kind of opportunities don't come along often.

Long story short, I took what he said to heart, and began applying for other comparable positions. In less than a week I had a job offer that would have been a 10 percent pay raise. Not spectacular, but they offered 100 percent remote work, and I kind of had a good feeling about the company and thought the position would be a fit for someone with my skills, so I accepted the offer. I gave my 2-weeks notice to my employer and less than 3-days later I was offered a promotion with a 30 percent pay raise to stay on board. I didn't get offered full work from home; the policy is one day a week for engineers, but my manager just told me to try and come one day a week, but if I can't I can't, it's no big deal. I could probably show up 1 day a month and it wouldn't matter, but I only live 20 minutes away from the office and like coming into the office on the one day my co-workers actually come, so the full WFH part wasn't even a driving motivation for me, but I did get a 30 percent pay raise and a promotion just for taking advantage of the current situation.

Don't get me wrong about what I was saying. I was of course being a bit sarcastic because this is the Misc. If you feel you can do that, then do it. It's one reason to strive to do better and be the best so that the demand for you is higher than the supply of you, so you can negotiate more. Sure they might pay you well but what they make from your productivity dwarfs that, not to mention losing you other people are going to lose money too.

Flip side Apple can do the same, but if they lose good people who just go to their competition, they very well may dig themselves into a hole they can't get out of.

Lol they have loads the most qualified people begging them for a job 24/7, they can replace you in an instant. All these IT majors are very popular these days, and there's loads highly qualified people from places like India and China who are more than happy to take your job if you don't want it. It's not like they need anyone special for most of these jobs anyways. None of these big tech employees are anywhere near as valuable as they think they are, it's a crowded job sector with loads of competition. Only the highest ranking people at these companies have any real value, and they aren't walking out because they get paid too well. Everyone else is just an NPC doing what they're told, something that anybody else could do with the right education.

99.350% of jobs are replaceable at pretty much a moments notice. So I'm going to ride out the work at home route for as long as a I can (quick look at Linkedin and quite a few management and above jobs are fully remote) then go to consulting.

Oh yeah, for sure, I know the only reason they offered me the money is that they knew they would have to pay an unknown who may not even have the same qualifications as me something similar. Plus I have skills and know things that are difficult, not impossible, but difficult to replace, and it would likely take the company several attempts to make the correct hire.

You're point about them making more from my productivity than what I actually bring home is one of the things that people are awakening to, and one of the key reasons why skilled employees are sticking it to employers who have archaic ideas about how to run a workforce. Those who stick to these archaic ideals will be no longer be sought after by the most desirable candidates.

Lmao, a ton of companies tried to outsource their IT departments and it ended in disaster, then they had to go back to an in-house IT department. If any Chan or Hajiib could do the work of some of these valuable tech employees, they would have already been hired. Believe it or not, it's actually really ****ing hard to get hired at a top tech company. Most of the Engineers that work there are likely aspies who dedicate most of thier aspie energy to all things IT and delve into liberal politics on the side. Despite some of their unfortunate political leanings, these people are often quite brilliant in their field and very difficult to replace. I can, however, foresee Chan and Hajiib eventually starting to close that gap and become viable replacements for many tech workers, but they aren't there yet. If they were, we would have all already been replaced.

Well obvious different companies work differently, sounds like your employer works fine with you doing things the way you have. It's just a mega corporation like Apple obviously has their own way of doing things and they employ so many people and attract so much attention that they can afford to do things smaller companies cannot.

That's a feel not a fact. There's a huge shortage of qualified IT workers in the West, they can easily job hop for decent payrises and most of the jobs that get filled are worked remotely.

Our IT team are officially 100% fully remote now and I'm sure the CIO made it that way to try to keep them.

I let my employees work from home briefly and never will again. Been there, done that, lesson learned.

Our generation has become so damn lazy they don't even want to leave the house.
That’s definitely not the way it worked for me. I went from working 40 hour weeks to 60+ hours per week due to the fact our office realized how easily it was to get a hold of me.

I also provide a lot of problem resolution for other IT staff. Working from home allowed me time to do my job versus helping everyone else do theirs. They have learned to research on their own.

Typically the way it works is:
- you get a starting bonus
- base salary
- annual bonus
- stock options upon signing that vest annually over 5 years. So if they give you 100k, you get 20k each year for 5 years

The sign-on bonuses and annual bonus could be anywhere from 100-200+k so it outweighs the advantage of staying for the stock options

Recently there has been a shift from high stock options to high base salary (but same total compensation) because top paying companies are seeing that stock options do nothing for retention

Everyone else is just an NPC doing what they're told, something that anybody else could do with the right education.
Not only begging, but the US govt helps subsidized their pay while dangling a green card in front of the faces of foreign born workers.

Also, many employers have an incentive as they dont pay FICA with certain visas."Under IRC Section 3121(b)(19) payees in a F-1, J-1, M-1, Q-1 or Q-2 non-immigrant visa status are not subject to FICA"

Imagine thinking you are un replaceable while every country has thousands of employees doing the exact same job...for much less.

Silicon Valley is ~75% foreign born....and that's with a hard visa cap, take that away and does it go to 95%?? With only the truly invaluable still on payroll.

Exactly this. My company is trying to force us back this month 2 days a week. There's literally no reason for my team to be in the office. We've worked successfully from home for 2 years now. My reviews have all been good. Not one complaint about my work. It's only about control. They want to be able to watch us.

I’ve been in IT for about 30 years now. I have rarely seen a company get their monies worth from off shore contracting. When employees are local, it is only somewhat better.

Many times it takes a while to understand each companies vernacular. This usually sets projects back months if not years.

Also the communication issues further complicate matters. I’ve seen companies do full 180s in less than a year after working with offshore contractors.

It is certainly more expensive to hire local talent, but it’s also much quicker to reach the finish line.

One company I worked for hired offshore to work the production support help desk. It lasted one year and before we started losing clients because our clients could not get support. The offshore help desk could only read basic cue cards and had no idea how anything worked

this.
there was a big push back in the early 2000's around here because "everyone was doing it" and it did not work out as planned.

the time difference, the language barrier, ect were all issues.
things got scaled back to the point where it is no big deal.

Yeah I'm being sent in 2 days a week for spurious reasons. I'm OK with it though to say hi to people and get into my old gym. Will be interesting to see what happens when their milly a year annual lease is up. I see downsizing and hotdesking ahead.

I sit between IT developers and a client services/admin team. Theoretically my job is to specify how new functionality should work and then test & implement but in reality 90% of my job is working out exactly in what manner the system just broke and asking IT to fix pls.

Tech company. Can work from anywhere. I dictate my own timings as well. It's a lot of work, a lot more than the average 9-5, but it's on my terms.
