In what's essentially an arranged marriage, so I guess none of the above.

Me: no, but if you'd been in this building before I would have remembered.
Her: why is that?
Me: two reasons. First you're beautiful and second, out of the 400 or so people in this building at the moment, you might be the only one who's black.
Her: I know. Civil engineering has a few black students and staff, but physics isn't just white, it's pale.
Me: that's because we're all ugly and have zero social skills, so they don't let us outside during daylight.
Her:you'renot ugly and your social skills seem fine to me.
Me: shhhh, don't tell anybody or they'll take away my geek card.
Her: well we can't have that now can we.
Me: who's your friend that you're waiting for
Her: xyz, you know her?
Me: to say hello to, but that's about it.
Her: so she can't give me any dirt on you then?
Me: no, if you want the dirt on me, you will have to meet me in the pub tonight.
Her: I'm not meeting you in the pub
Me: yes you are, I'll be there at 8

I got to the pub at quarter to 8 and she walked in at 5 to.

That conversation is not taking place on a college campus in 2022. No chance in hell.

Yeah, I'm old enough to know better. Though I worked from age 16 to age 36 [SAHM life then].

Nice. I imagine you have a lot of shared experience.

I hadn't noticed that too much here; doesn't mean it isn't happening. I think the one spot I recall seeing mostly younger workers recently was a movie theater.

That story has been told alot. It's usuallyherdoing the telling.

Most people have really crap stories, so when you have a good one, you might as well use it.

She very nearly didn't turn up to the pub though, she thought I was a bit too arrogant and self assured.

In all seriousness, can you see a white guy walking up to a black woman and saying that on a college campus in 2022?

"Lost? Why, is it because I'm a woman in the physics building, or because I'm black? Why shouldn't I be here?" Then things would go down hill from there.

That conversation could take place today, but the odds that she would actually show up in the pub at 8 are near zero.

So what's funny about women nowadays with dating apps are a few things. For one a lot of them have the same boring answers to prompts. Two they go on their to find Mr right only to disregard the guys that may actually be the perfect match. They then bitch on the apps about where is all of the good guys at. You just don't see the typical met in highschool/college/ or even in the grocery store as much. My grandparents met at dancing club, how many couples do you hear met doing something like that? Less and less. It of course happens but with the current culture it's becoming more and more rare.

Yeah, I'm hard-stopping right there. No way I'm talking about race with strangers.

I knew of my wife because I went to high school in the same county as her. She is younger than me but not so much so that we don't have friends in common and had met in passing before. My step brother started dating one of her friends and they set us up

No, we both moved away at the same time. Grew up different areas, schools. I just retired military so stopped moving around. I have been FB friends with her since 2008. Reconnected.

This was the 90s in the UK and you could have that conversation. Out of the 98 people in my year I think there were 9 women and all 98 people were white.

At that time, and in that place, what I said wasn't controversial. Certain parts of the campus were male, female, white, asian etc and it was a running joke.

Physics was seen as being pale, white, socially awkward guys in black t-shirts with acne, because that description fitted a lot of them.

A black women stood out in that building like a sore thumb and she laughed when I said it, because she understood exactly what I meant.

Today: you would be taking your life in your hands saying that to a stranger on a college campus. You are absolutely right in not talking race with strangers in today's social/political climate, as it's a minefield.
