I believe that in the Russian judicial system there is no presumption of innocence, and the onus is not on the prosecution. I believe that the defense is expected to mitigate guilt.

Not sure if this guilty plea is the start of the mitigation process or if they go straight to sentencing.

10 years for some hash oil is beyond the scope of her crime imo. Russia will do what it wants to to do, though. She is certainly getting a firsthand experience in how the American justice system compares to the Russian counterpart.

Hopefully this will change her mind about condemning America and perhaps will take a more level-headed approach to addressing grievances here without portraying the country as some backwards hellscape.

Not celebrating her getting ten years, but it’s definitely ironic considering how she has tried to paint the US as some aggressively oppressive nation for so long.

People also forget she’s not some naive tourist. She plays basketball in Russia to supplement her WNBA salary, which is paid by the NBA because the WNBA has never turned a profit. She knows the laws, the rules, and should know how strict those fukkers are.

It was just piss poor luck her getting popped right before the war, and with such a weak president in charge. Trump would have gotten her back, same as he got the college basketball kids back for shoplifting in China.

I honestly think Trump could probably make a phone call and get it done as a private citizen. The problem is, as soon as he did, there would be 20 different investigations started by Congress, DOJ, etc.
Nobody really cares about her. It's all politics. Chances are she will be part of some sort of prisoner exchange at some point, and both sides will get something they want.

The only reason the WNBA even exists is because with today's woke culture it has to. They probably write it off as a loss every year. Thankfully there aren't enough women hockey players that are decent to start a pro league or the NHL would have to as well.

Ten years is a bit much for a bit of hash oil though IMO. I could see a year or two, especially as an example.
