It was needed, along with the Presidential elections in 2013 where the negotiators on Iran's side stopped using interpreters and...spoke English. Some of whom were educated in the English speaking West at some of our best schools. Who seemed far more amenable to a future for Iran that didn't involve those sanctions, or the IRGC's burning American flags and so on. You're aware that when the JCPOA was adopted, Iranian kids chanted "USA! USA!" in the street, right?

That Trump wanted to re-negotiate the terms to include ballistic missile tests made sense, and when that wasn't possible the EU adopted more sanctions against Iran to target that behavior.

Sanctions are one of the best foreign policy tools to use, when used right. And Trump was perhaps the only US President in the last long while who could have exerted enough pressure on the Korean peninsula to make the DPRK back down, since clearly China won't.
You think the Iranians want regime change, America style? LMFAO

What they want is for us to fuk off and let them live decent lives. Drop the sanctions and wait. Iran will liberalize on its own. This is not about the Iranian people so spare me your bullchit. It never was. It was always about American hegemony. We even started this chit in Iran for BP or did you forget all that?

I can tell you this. If I'm the Iranian govt rn, I'm thinking I'm going for nukes or bioweapons or some other wmd. Because I don't trust Israel or the US to do anything they say they will do. We all saw what happened to Libya when they complied. The going message now is get WMD or get raped. Don't believe me? ASK UKRAINE ABOUT IT.

This is how the world works. The very institutions of liberalism are being destroyed before our very eyes by the liberals (in the IR sense) of PNAC who want to provoke and push their agendas in a grotesquely inequitable fashion. Unipolarity has ended. This is a multipolar world. Accept it or burn in a nuclear war. Every single thing the wise men who ended the cold war worked to build is being torn down by provocative and "progressive" retards. Ask Jack Matlock.

Um, they ARE our enemies and have been. Or "we" are their enemy depending on how you want to look at it and if by "us" you mean the present powers that have been benefiting from the petrodollar/eurodollar.

Things were mostly on the DL before now is all.

Though I would concede that the US pressing to have Russia cut off from access to their US$ reserves certainly seems to have sped things up.

If you understand anything about history and military strategy, you'll understand Putin's decision. That it was an "unprovoked invasion" is a bold faced lie. That Putin is a revanchist seeking to rebuild the USSR is also a bold faced lie, evident by the lack of conventional military buildup by Russia and RAND's own reporting on Russia's military capabilities. Russia would have needed to invade with 5x as many troops to conquer all of Ukraine. That is clearly not his objective. The assault on Kiev was to try to quickly force a surrender.
And I agree that "we" wanted a war and apparently STILL want a war. Money laundering and dirty deals do seem to be part of the story, but I'm no longer convinced that is the WHOLE story.

You don't seem to understand anything about the implementation of Minsk, from the legitimacy or otherwise of attempts at prisoner exchange, to the border skirmishes (and who initiated - it was not only UA), and so on. Nor do you seem to understand that the European Union's sanctions from then are tied to the full implementation of the Minsk Agreement.

Even what you write about "pre-empting", that holds true for the energy restrictions, because it was clear that the EU was going to slap sanctions on the Russian Federation in any case. Yet the mental midgets here (the Russian plebs) write "daddy Putin cut the gas and Europeans will freeze" don't seem to understand the causality there either: thatthe EU was going to do it anyway. Regardless, so that remains the normative and salient point.

As in the past, when Trump pulled the U.S out of the JCPOA, he advocated for more sanctions again on Iran to pressure them into further compliance with international rule of law: the ballistic missile tests that aren't covered by the JCPOA itself. Sowhy are mental midgets here now talking about "globohomo" this, and whatever, because sanctions are being used [effectively] as a tool again?

Even when you write "Ukrainian nationalists" in that way; even the first use of "Nazis" - are you aware that it was Russia talking about Nazis in Maidan square?

So do the persons who think they're so 'in tune' here, accusing me of 'quoting X talking points', really not realize you're spouting Russian propaganda? I mean, let me guess - the OPCW is fully corrupt, there never were any chemical weapons or precursors in Syria right? Nothing at all! The OPCW lied, manipulated by "the west", and Assad never used chemical weapons? This is what Russia says in the UN Security Council. But great for Putin right? The USA should turn a blind eye to international peace and security because...this is Ukraine's fault? It's Syria's fault? For Christ's sake.
If by "globohomo" you are referring to the apparent conglomerate of the US/NATO/WEF then IMO the sanctions were at least partially an attempt to defang Russia and defend the petrodollar, though a foolish one.

It still looks to me as if what we are seeing is a battle over the new emergent monetary system with US/NATO/WEF on one side and the BRICs on the other side, though some people believe that the WEF is on BRICs side, or perhaps is playing both sides.

Big things are happening...specific events and dates to be determined, but the ground is moving so to speak.

Re: the war in Ukraine not only is Biden wanting to send them another $13.7 Billion above the $40 Billion that was already allocated.

I've heard that a large number of US troops are being stationed in Poland and that troops from other NATO countries are also being stationed there.

There has been a strong media push in the UK to try and gin up public support for UK troops to enter into direct battle with Russia in Ukraine. And I saw today that the UK has put out an RFP for a large number of field rations for including some for cold weather deployment.

*India*, China, and several other countries are participating in military drills with Russia.
The Russian defence ministry said the Vostok 2022 [East 2022] exercise will be held until September 7 at seven firing ranges in Russia’s Far East and the Sea of Japan, and that it involves more than 50,000 troops and 5,000 weapons units, including 140 aircraft and 60 warships.

Russian General Staff chief, General Valery Gerasimov, will personally oversee the drills, which will involve troops from several ex-Soviet nations, China, India, Laos, Mongolia, Nicaragua and Syria.

So much to unpack. 1) As an American, you respect that "vote"? I mean...? Talk about "stop the steal" - it literally was "stolen"; 2) Ethnically X doesn't mean squat; or do you think the USA should support the One China Policy?; 3) What you're concerned with is strange - because President Yanukovych fled first. Within reason. A "people" has a right of self-determination, but that vote didn't constitute the self-determination. The territory was annexed under international law; and it's that breach of international law that reigns supreme here.

Let's get back to *. The Vilnius Summit of 29 November 2013. What was supposed to happen is that Ukraine signs the "Association Agreement and its Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area" with the EU. This didn't happen - one call from Putin - and he took a cash payout to not sign the Agreement. This had nothing to do with "Naziism", it would be similar to Putin paying Mexico to stay out of NAFTA. "Self-determination" applies to states as well, but you seem to have completely missed Russia's maneuver here. They have always seen Ukraine as the jewel of the Soviet Union, and Ukraine - with the support of its people - chose, throughreal elections, a leader who had promised them a European future. One that he backed out of as soon as Putin asked him to.

Both the Russian and Ukrainian people as a whole would have benefitted from the full implementation of Minsk. More on this later.

Overly simplistic. The message sent was that Trump will freely negotiate what he perceives to be as 'bad deals', from NAFTA, to NATO contributions, to the JCPOA, to peace in the middle east, to peace on the Korean peninsula. A risky, volatile, yet potentially rewarding approach. DPRK would have been ahugewin.

What it is? I mean, it was dumb of Ukraine's government post-Yanukovych to limit the use of the Russian language, and let's be clear - this affected old folks trying to register at mayor offices and such. Discriminatory for sure, and on the marches - it is not the same. Tiki torches? You're looking into the USA again, and that's what's so confusing here. In R/P there are so many who argue that Germany is cucked for its response (historically and current) to the Holocaust. These folks, that R/P often maligns, apparently now have no idea what Naziism looks like? Tiki torhces and marches?

He didn't try to "dismantle NATO". He tried, tl;dr, to make sure that Germany couldn't declare its MEDEVAC contributions as equivalent to lethal military equipment contributions. That's one. Also, to show that European NATO member states, especially those constantly crying "Big bad Russia, let's do NATO exercises as close as we can to SHOW THEM!" - should simply build and man their own garrisons. It shouldn't be Americans paying for that and manning it. And I agree.

A negotiated settlement makes sense, but let's not pretend this has been easy for Russia in Ukraine. Their soldiers are dying, regardless of what the propaganda machine says. I honestly thought Russia would do better - but in reality I'm glad thatif push came to shove, the U.S could shove Russia's head up its own arse in a conflict, especially with all of its real friends.

Drop the sanctions in the face of continued and continuous escalations from them now, flagrant violations of the JCPOA while making public statements threatening to nuke a neighbor? My turn: LMFAO. Let me guess, Russia and China calling to ease sanctions on the DPRK while they escalate and conduct a record number of missile tests - that's what should happen?

Get with the program. This is the U.S.A. Not your hello kitty island adventure LARPing paradise. That's why I emphasized this earlier - know the foreign policies of the governments you're talking about, and understand where they come from. Even your comment on Libya is incredibly ignorant - and you persist in your LARPing 'knowing the people' yet have never even set foot in Libya, I guarantee it.

It certainly seems that *someone* is still planning for a war here.
I don't know what "globohomo" means, I saw someone I think JJay1150 or something post that over and over again today. Sanctions are a direct consequence among the like-minded, even when those sanctions have a detrimental impact on the economies of the states adopting them. This was true back in Iran (incredibly so for the EU) and now again on Russia, since in both cases the USA hasn't had much at stake from a sanctions perspective. Whereas the EU has. It bears repetition: sanctions are a natural foreign policy consequence if a breach of international law is seen, and since they can no longer be adopted by the Security Council because of Russia and China, the rest of the world has had to think of a way to adopt so-called "unilateral coercive measures", as Cuba, Russia, China, Iran etc. call them at the UN.

On "planning for war" - I mean, all the NATO drills close-ish to the Russian border well before the invasion of Ukraine - probably weren't a great idea. As it wasn't a great idea to create a free trade zone up to Russia's geographical border and then exclude it from it, which the EU tried to do with Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia. But none of this excuses what Russia has done - not then in 2014, and not now. Only the worst form of Russian shill apologizes for Russia's flagrant breaches of international law, and committing of crimes against humanity, 'cuz language discrimination, cuz free trade discrimination, cuz armament buildup'.

It was annexed with the support of the Crimeans. It was a largely bloodless annexation. And the country just had a coup. Yeah because Yanukovych was given an ultimatum: join the EU over a period of like fuking decades or get into the Eurasian Trade Union quickly. The Eurasian Trade Union btw didn't present this ultimatum. The EU did. So, he made the right call. The EU insisted he couldn't be in both.

No it is not overly simplistic. Pretend you're one of them and think for 5 s what you see.

We have videos. Yes tiki torches and marches. Yes in Ukraine. Yes fuking nazis. I love how the media has memoryholed the neonazis as if they somehow disappeared.

God, if you think those people are anything other than card carrying nazis, you're fuking naive or more likely, you endorse that philosophy. They are blatantly trying to build an ethnostate.

What is that? A threat? I'm not scared of the DOD. These people could consider doing their jobs and stop jeopardizing the future of humanity and American lives. It had everything to do with NATO membership and also with protecting the locals. Why is this hard to understand?

Mistakes were made. Lessons were not learned. The same people make the same mistakes. It's "small", but large enough to influence the government. I'll remind you that the nazi party of Germany was also a minority of Germans. Svoboda had tremendous support in 2014 (something like 20%), and while it has fragmented, nationalist fascism as a whole has not in Ukraine.

He doesn't like NATO. He wants out. And yes, they should be paying more. Trump may try to sell it as a 900 iq power move, but he made his thoughts on NATO very clear.

Yes a settlement makes sense. Guess who is saying it doesn't? PNAC people like this piece of chit.

The US can't shove Russia's head anywhere. In fact, we couldn't even win a conventional engagement in Ukraine vs Russia. Russia can escalate this, and Ukraine quite literally has zero chance of winning. They need to settle. They've already lost more territory than they would have if they had implemented Minsk 2. We are fighting a dangerous proxy war that endangers the future of humanity so some nazis can LARP and Ukraine can resolve its identity crisis. If Zelensky had anything resembling a scrotum, he'd have implemented Minsk 2. He was scared of the nazis murdering him. He ran on a platform of peace and failed to bring it.

Bottom line is this: Putin is absolutely not Hitler 2.0. He does not have revanchist ambitions. His hand was forced and he has limited the scope of this war. We are overreacting, being hysterical, demonizing him, and doing everything opposite of what we need to do to ensure peace and security.

Also regarding the "small" presence of neonazis, we invaded Afghanistan, a country of 20 million at the time, over the actions of a terrorist group, Al Qaeda, of some 100 people with ties to the Taliban government there. (Oh and btw Putler fuking gave us the Northern Alliance and let us transport troops and supplies through Russia. He was also the first to call us and visit for the memorial. Yes Mr. hates America Vlad the Chad reached out in friendship. Multiple fuking times. I could rattle off a long list of times we snubbed Russia like ABM, NATO expansion, Libya, Syria, etc.)

If that war was justified, surely this one is. Thousands of Russian Ukrainians died in Donbass. The Ukrainian govt was openly passing oppressive laws. The neonazi militias were integrated into the government and military. Even Ukraine's foreign minister to Germany was praising Bandera in an interview. They are glorifying nazis. Many of them are nazis. And fighting nazis is something of a Russian specialty.

Anyway, like I said, from a geopolitical pov, we are pushing NATO and encircling the Black Sea. Who provoked whom? Zoom out and look at the map.

Putin will be remembered not as a revanchist tyrant warmonger, but as a man who tried for peace and who stood up to the aggression of the US during its period of unipolar warmongering and a man who stood against fascism like his ancestors before him.

Again, were he not so patient and earnestly seeking peace, he would have attacked in 2014. I am positive he doesn't want to destroy Ukraine or try to control all of it. He means exactly what he said. He wants it out of NATO, and denazified, and he wants to ensure the security of the Russian Ukrainians (along with his access to the Black Sea).

Uh huh. What did I dismiss as talking points? I went through every single thing you said. (The tldr bs comment was because I can't quote the wall of text.) The central problem with our foreign policy is we can't have it two ways. You either make peace with bad people and accept the world as it is or you make war to change it. I see no reason to oust Vladimir Putin. Yes, he throws people out of windows and poisons them. That's how politics is done in Russia. And it has liberalized considerably since the time of Stalin. We let perfect be the enemy of good. Our efforts to make things better tend to make them worse. And American hegemony itself is dangerous for global stability.

I understand what drives people like Wolfowitz. The guy hates tyrants. He truly believes in freedom. But to pay any price for freedom is fuking stupid. The road to liberalism is through prosperity and education, not war. War does the opposite. War leads to short term thinking, fragmentation, and a destruction of the prosperity and education necessary to sustain a liberal society.

We are marching forward off a cliff. You may be blind to it, but think about the potential for nuclear war. Think about the reversal of all the arms control steps made. Look at where we are going. Is it worth it? Will it lead to better outcomes? I don't think so.

I ask you to think if Russia needs a regime change. Putin's people support him. He has done well for Russia, in spite of everything. Frankly, he'd run Ukraine better than they are running it now. This war didn't need to happen. It was a mistake. And Putin never needed to be our enemy.

Hey, I'm a nobody. Who cares what I say? But you can look at what Jack Matlock, Stephen Cohen, John Mearsheimer, Stephen Walt, Jeff Sachs, Barry Posen and god knows how many other voices not part of the Blob have said about this. OR you can believe McFaul's, Fukuyama's, and the rest of PNAC crew's version of the events. It's debated. Nothing is clearcut because we can never really know Russia's intentions.

I could be totally wrong about Putin, but I don't think so. Again, the simple question is why didn't he attack sooner? I'll also remind you that McFaul himself says Putin's decision seems irrational. Maybe because his interpetation IS irrational. McFaul also knew the effect Gaddafi's death had on Putin. He should be able to see what has happened and what destroyed relations. That he can't is either deliberate or just him being so biased that he can't see.

I mean come on...how is NATO not a threat to Russia? How can anyone say that with a straight face? Do you really think Russia doesn't see it as a threat?

To say this is all a shameless excuse for a land grab is dismissing the entire history of the circumstance in Ukraine. Surely you can all see why Ukraine presents a novel threat to Russia while the Baltics being integrated into NATO did not. What's different? The neonazis and access to the Black Sea. That's what. And that is a vital element of Russia's stated declaration. That we are ignoring the whole picture here and the theory for Putin's war and assuming everything he says is a blatant lie is just dumb. He's tried over and over to tell us the problem here.

Ukraine will eventually wake up to reality. They will need to surrender territory. And yeah, it's a sad message about sovereignty to the world. But it's always been this way. That great powers can influence their neighbors and have security interests that should not be challenged (without war) is an obvious reality of the world. No amount of liberalism erases that. We need to build institutions that respect the interests of all constituents or else we will return to the law of the jungle. And those interests have to be weighted by power. That's why the league of nations failed while the UN, which gives some extra power to great powers, has been more effective. But the UN itself is failing now precisely because of disproportionate US influence.

We don't run the show anymore.

You assume the worst of Iran. Even if they had nuclear weapons, they wouldn't use them. It's completely irrational. A nuclear Iran isn't the end of the world. Israel will be fine. It just will have to make some concessions for Palestinians and stop being ridiculous. Deterrence will secure the peace. It's a bad solution, and the JCPOA was better, but if we can't be trusted, this is the only way. NK is an impossible situation. We have them completely crippled economically, and they have zero reason to abandon their nuclear program knowing that we may seek regime change. Their only play is to try to get weapons to threaten us. Libya complied with our WMD demands. Libya was destroyed. You tell me what is ignorant about that.

You keep saying Trump's 900 IQ maximum pressure campaign would have worked and been hyuge. But it didn't work. It didn't fuking work.

You see it that way. I'll remind you the Ukrainians also commit crimes against humanity. War is ugly. Russia is not clean and makes no effort to pretend to be clean. The military strategy behind the war makes perfect sense to me, and no, I am not on the Kremlin payroll. I'm just a guy watching the trainwreck in slow motion, and unfortunately, I am a passenger, quietly saying "Shouldn't we slow down, guys? Guys? GUYS?!"

Ahh. So, the answer is no. Good to know.

Hey does massive brain drain count as stealing IP too? And we also steal IP and spy on other countries too. But that's ok because we are "the good guys".

China has 1.4 billion people to feed. I am sure our ridiculously wealthy drug and tech companies will survive somehow. Maybe skip that latte at Starbucks. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps. A little self reliance.

Our patent laws are absolute bullchit anyway, and a major cause of inequality here.
