Since most good jobs in Japan are like public accounting in the Big 4 (Accounting), you only have a few attempts in school to get recruited. Then if you don't get recruited, you are chit out of luck in Japan. Then you become a hikikomori.
Nothing like the White man's fetish. White people choose this because they have lived an easy life. Kind of like why White people like to kick their kids out at 18 and they like to pretend they are homeless by camping.
E.g. poor's in China "camp" every day of their life, but to White people, it's a fun hobby.
