Not to mention a complete shift in how their societies were organized followed by a forced cultural and religious opression.

Other cultures in mexico close to them (the purepecha culture) was already at the time very skilled with metal working and they had reached refined Cooper era metalworking by that time. Cooper and later bronce tools were beginning to become widespread by the time the spanish came.

Given another couple centuries they would have used metalworking to evolve for sure. They were limited because they didn't have horses or beasts of burden like oxes and so on. Which is very interesting to see how their society would have evolved.

Colonial spanish rule was brutal. They had a strict caste system that kept natives basically as slaves.

They didn't give a single fuk about quality of life for the 99% of the population. They never had any desires to "develop" the new lands or to focus on innovation. Quite the contrary they focused on maintaining the status quo of their rigid caste system because they only saw the colonies as a dump to be abused and they focused solely on extraction of primary resources (minerals, cashcrops, precious woods, etc)

They never tried to develop local industry or inovations they just focused on extraction.

They didn't have it as good as English colonies but better than Belgium's colonial holdings
