It all got stolen out of the trunk of my car parked in the driveway of my house.

Currently got a new large camelback backpack and slowly acquiring all the gear again to throw into my other duffle bag.

Got my new life straws just last week. Next will be camping gear, bag, tent, stove, etc

I treat my bug out bag as an overnight in the woods with minimal gear kinda bag. When I want to travel light for 24-48 hours ill pack:

Grayl geopress bottle, Esbit pocket stove with fuel and cup, fire starter kit (bic lighter & drier lint inside a pill bottle), 2 meals, woobie, hammock, kukri, headlamp, minimal med kit (sh*t pills, tick remover, sting gel, chapstick, sunscreen), a little paracord or duct tape, and a rain jacket.

I've got a closet full of my outdoor gear and would take too long to list here. Done everything from high altitude winter backpacking to river rafting trips to multi-day hunting expeditions. Love this stuff, ama

The cans while offering a nice amount of protein for long time storage…you’re still screwed once you open it. It will spoil. Seems pouches are really the only way to go

I originally had the same concern as you. But if you are at a point where you actually do need to open a can, you will go through it before it even goes bad. Even without refrigeration. put the lid back on and you will go through it before it has a chance to go bad. Let’s guess 10 days, it’s freeze dried and opened

But of course it’s good to have some of the single pouches on hand too.

Ah. So in the can is still freeze dried. Interesting. Question is what is more important for sustenance. What you get in a ready to eat packet or the can where at worst sceanario you’re just eating meat.

In emergency situations you’re going to want high calories and density. I have a few large 5lb peanut butter jars that I’ll store and then eat one before it goes bad and rotate out. Also in worse case scenarios a far past its expired date peanut butter with rancid oils is not going to hurt you and still provide high fat calorie content.

There’s people that talk about keeping a large bottle of olive oil for how much fat calorie content you’re getting from it all just in a bottle. Any can foods are great to have on hand too and just get something you would actually want to eat that way you can rotate it out and eat them before they go bad. Spaghetti o’s and meatball type stuff too. It’s tasty and cheap per meal and you’re just trying to survive not eat clean.

Those mountain house meals are great to buy and set it and forget it. 25 year shelf life and freeze dried. In an emergency situation you can even just open the can and eat it freeze dried without rehydrating with boiling water.
