I think people often forget that the preceding generation before the Silent Generation had a 90% Elderly poverty rate. That is one of the reasons SS was created in the first place.

so should we turn into China and just let old people die for the sake of the economy?
What do you think would happen to pensions, if everyone who collected one lived to 100?

It wont happen because nobody has the balls to do it. The can will be kicked down the road until the system totally implodes.

Social security payouts are already forecasted to drop. The payouts right now are being funded by a mix of new money coming on and the social security trust fund, which is somewhere north of $2trillion but is forecasted to be depleted by 2033. When the trust fund is depleted, that will force a reduction in payouts.

And prices will be higher in 2033 than they are today, because inflation.

Social security also supports a much wider group than just retired people

One in three of today's babies will live to see their 100th birthday, according to latest estimates.

An article from 2016.

Now, for example, many cops who stay till they are forced out, die a year later. But if they lived to 90-100, the city would lose its mind, and probably get rid of pensions, or lower the rate.

So many of you are broke in your late 20s, early 30s, living at home, and you're already talking about retirement?
