And Rocky's big fight in the movie happens in the Philadelphia Spectrum, the same city where Rocky Marciano's fight happened, in which he got beat up a bit in a long 13 round fight, but Marciano kept coming.....and Rocky KO'd Jersey Joe in the 13th.

It would be foolish to say that Marciano wasn't an inspiration for Stallone.
The fact is that Chuck Wepner's performance, his dogged tenacity, against Ali is what inspired the character of Rocky Balboa and Stallone wrote that film after through Chuck's fight.

I take nothing from Rocky (the real guy) but that Rocky character isn't based on him, it's based, initially, on Chuck Wepner in his fight against Muhammad Ali. This isn't something I'm making up out of the blue. Anyone close to sport film knows this (or if you're just in to boxing, but I happen to be in to both).

Chuck Wepner was the inspiration for Rocky Balboa.

an excerpt

'Real Rocky' Wepner finally getting due
.......At a theater in Los Angeles, struggling actor Sylvester Stallone watched the Ali-Wepner fight and promptly went home and banged out the script for a little movie called "Rocky." It wasn't based on a true story -- not directly. But it was inspired by and borrowed heavily from a true story.By the time the movie was released on Dec. 3, 1976, word had spread that Wepner was Stallone's muse, and Wepner basked in the glory of hearing his first name chanted in the New York theater where he watched the film.

The relationship between Wepner, Stallone and the film franchise that unites them has been a complicated one for the 35 years since. Wepner appreciates that "Rocky" has made his 15 minutes of fame everlasting. He claims to like Stallone personally. Stallone had Wepner read for the part of sparring partner ****** Weber" in "Rocky II," but Wepner admits he did about as well in the audition as Rocky did reading cue cards for aftershave commercials. According to Wepner, Stallone had still promised him that when the right movie came along, he would give Chuck a part. Twenty years on, when Wepner found out that Stallone was filming a movie called "Copland" not far from where Wepner lived in New Jersey and hadn't asked the former fighter to be a part of it, Wepner finally gave up on the notion that Stallone was going to throw him a bone.

A few years of stewing later, in 2003, Wepner sued Stallone for cashing in on his life story and never sharing a dime with "the real Rocky." Stallone settled with Wepner for an undisclosed amount.

The publicity that legal battle attracted drew Feuerzeig and Mike Tollin, executive producer of "The Real Rocky," back to this iconic underdog story from their respective youths...........

This isn't some well kept secret, this has been known since Rocky first hit the theaters.

RIP. Nobody can deny his prowess as an athlete and boxer.

It's somewhat new knowledge to me, but Ali visited my country a few decades ago when the country was still young.

Got fuking damn.

RIP to a great and brave man, both in and out of the ring.

No athlete has ever transcended his sport quite like Ali, and it's arguable that no other boxer has had quite the competition that Ali had faced and beaten either. Three of the men he has beaten--Frazier, Foreman, and Liston--were good enough to to have been among the top 10 greatest heavyweights of all time. No other heavyweight champion can make that claim. Actually, I'm not sure if anyone of any weight class can make that claim.

RIP to Ali. one of his toughest fights was the one against Parkinson. 32 years is a long time. Hopefully Jimmy Lennon announced him through the pearly gates. Howard Cosell, and Joe Frazier also greeting him. May his legacy live on.

Only Rocky went undefeated.

Only reason you're arguing this, is because Rocky is white, so you think he's not as athletic or something as blacks. Rocky had the most powerful punch in boxing.
Yes, people are only saying that because he's white.

Look you inbred Florida piece of chit, this is obviously a mourning thread. If you want to bring in race politics fuk off and start your own thread.

RIP

Mentioned yesterday that this is one of the few famous deaths that would get me and it has. I want to say I'm surprised by some of the comments in this thread but I'm not. The guy stood for what he believed in and it cost him a lot, his impact transcended sport where he was one of the greatest. What's funny is the kind that are criticising him are probably the same guys that pride themselves on being un-pc and sticking up for what they believe in even if it goes against the grain. But obviously this will be mainly on the internet for them, whereas Ali stuck up for his beliefs on the world stage with much more to lose.

Back in the summer of 1977, at the peak of his powers and as reigning world champion, Ali made a sensational visit to Tyneside.

For millions of people, he was the ultimate sporting hero. He was the most famous man on the planet.

In the new age of global television, we had been entranced by Ali’s supreme charisma and confidence - and willed him to victory in his epic fights against Foreman and Frazier, among others.

That he was coming to our little corner of the planet - the North East of England - was incredible, and none of us who saw the great man in the flesh will ever forget it.

In July 1977, to the huge surprise of Johnny Walker, a Whitburn painter and decorator, Ali accepted his invitation to travel from the United States to South Shields and help raise money for his boxing club.

During his four-day visit he toured the region in an open-topped bus as thousands of us took to the streets to catch a glimpse.

He visited Newcastle’s Pendower Hall Special School and Grainger Park Boys Club. He sparred with local boys and ex-professionals, and played darts at Gypsies Green Stadium in South Shields .

He even tucked into a traditional North East stottie, and attended South Shields Al-Ahzar Mosque with his wife and baby daughter to have his wedding blessed by the imam.

He was mobbed everywhere he went.

In the same year as the Queen , on her Silver Jubilee, and US President Jimmy Carter toured the region, the Chronicle reported: “Muhammad Ali continued his own royal tour of Tyneside today with visits to Newcastle and South Shields, having clowned, laughed and cuddled his way into our hearts.” And he told us: “I have been in London about five times but never heard of Newcastle till now.”

Farewell to the “The Greatest”. He truly did “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee”.

Muhammad Ali will be greatly missed. RIP champ.
