I will say this a million times. Lots of tradesmen own small businesses. I know several plumbers and electricians raking in over 100k. You don't make it working for someone else.

The problem with that is that $100k is not a lot of money. and the Tradesmen who have their oen businesses that get to take home that much money had to bust their ass to the bone in order for their business to be that successiful (no vacations wirking 7 days per week etc etc).

Meanwhile I work with PA's that make about $115k right out of college, and their schedules are 7 on and 7 off (so every other week is like a mini vacation). They only make slightly less than a Physician, but don't have to deal with the responsibilities of being one get the same recognition of prestige of being a doctor but a minimal amount of responsibility....

That's funny...I actually have a tough time explaining to non technical people what the hell I do. Even with my parents who worked in tech (telecommunications) it's hard to explain to them at times what I do in terms of cloud computing, configuration management, etc.

You can make 100K doing STEM stuff...you still may at times have to work long hours. Like I bust my ass at work but I have a flexible time off period, so that's good because burn out is real.

I don't think I could do a trade job and not get time off I'd get burned out!
